About this listen

For 20 years the officers in the Pennsylvania State Police Barracks have kept a secret in Shed B: a vintage Buick which lures the troopers to come and take a look. Young Ned Wilcox, son of the recently deceased officer Curt, has started hanging around the barracks. One day he can't resist peeking through the windows. And it's time to share the secret. The veteran troopers sit Ned down on the smoking bench and tell him every skin-curdling detail - from the Buick's arrival to the terrifying light-shows and what it sucks in and breathes out. For the Buick is a conduit to another world. As King puts it, 'when we confront the deep and authentic unknown, we glimpse that place where our familiar universe stops.'

"One of his freshest and most original books... a beautiful excursion into new narrative territory, showing an accomplished storyteller... a portal into King's incredible imagination." ( Independent on Sunday)

I enjoyed this book. It's not King's best but still a thoroughly enjoyable story with a nice range of voice actors and good pacing.

Enjoyable, Classically King

I'm not usually a fan of Stephen King's books. The movies and novellas are great, but the books I find difficult to get into. Not this one. It's fabulous. It's definitely one you can keep coming back to. I mean, where did the darn 'thing' come from? More importantly, where did it lead?

You had to mess with the dog. Not my favorite tension builder. Boo. No fair!

Not the dog!

I didn't realise that this was going to be narrated by a different reader for each characters viewpoint, but then have each reader try and give accents to the other characters. Can be a bit confusing and a few were annoying to listen to.

I enjoyed the story though, I prefer this type of harder sci fi from S.K., even when a little far fetched.

I liked it

An interesting look at the experiences of the officers of a highway patrol unit as they deal with the influences of an otherworldly Buick 8.

Not bad

What disappointed you about From a Buick 8?

It was so boring, drawn out, and had very little in the way of "excitement".
I felt like I was watching paint dry.

Mind you, if you like the constant flashbacks, and dislike straightforward storylines (with or without twists and turns), then you'd probably love this book.

Must say, this book re-enforced my dislike of Stephen King novels (I used to collect his books, but they all just drag out so much that they became droll and boring)

What will your next listen be?

I'm currently listening to Alien Covenant, as I love books that are movies.
Wish there were more Dean Koontz novels to choose from, the older ones, as I would love to listen to some of them.

What character would you cut from From a Buick 8?

OMG I'd cut them all.

Any additional comments?

Like I said - if you like how Stephen King writes - mega loads of flashbacks, lots of pieces of information that are obviously just filler because they have no impact on the storyline at all, then go ahead and listen to this book....

Just no

the story rambles too much. Not much to keep you interested in what might happen. No real action in the story

disappointing. neve thought I'd say that about an SK novel
