Publisher's Summary

Throne of Glass meets Black Jewels in this twisted yet alluring dark fantasy tale.

Quinn Darkova, freed from the chains of slavery, wants nothing more than vengeance against those who sold her. But with her dark powers on the rise and her ascension nearing, Quinn's blood retribution will have to wait in favor of her immediate survival.

Lazarus Fierte is a nobleman without equal. He's as controlling as he is stubborn, and for the last six years, he's been waiting for a woman to appear - but not just any woman. A Maji of great power, capable of terrible things. She could be the key to everything he holds dear.

His savior...or his destroyer. The only thing he didn't predict was that she would become both.

Contains mature themes.

Too grim to be enjoyable

This is well thought out and well written. Having said that I didn’t like it. There was nothing to redeem a dark tale. The characters were unlikeable and perhaps not explained well enough for me to accept/understand why their being completely Dark Magic was a good thing. Insufficient efforts to introduce empathy, curiosity, humour, kindness or charm was made for me to purchase the sequel.

10/5 stars!

If I could give this book more stars I would! I absolutely LOVED it! I’ve been in a funk since reading Sarah J. Maas’ series because I was so in love with those characters, and this book finally pulled me out! Quinn Darkova was instantly captivating! She’s mysterious, but also compassionate. I loved her spunk, the way her past shaped her, and her ability to defend herself. Her relationships with the other characters were unique, and the author did an amazing job of sucking the reader into this world without making it seem too far fetched. The setting, the fighting, the magic...ahhh! I cannot wait for book 2. I was given this book in exchange for an honest review, but honestly I would have bought it in a heartbeat. It’s amazing!

If you hate ASMR, don't even try to listen to this

It's such a shame that the narrator pronounces every single god forsaken consonant, despite how unnatural it is. I really liked what I heard of the story, but I couldn't even make it to an hour before I had to turn it off. If you have ANY degree of misophonia or issues with ASMR, you will absolutely hate this audiobook.

Turn the speed up

Very good book and extremely entertaining! If you have an issue with the narrator’s annunciation, just pop the speed up to 1.2x and it solves that problem. Slowed down it can be distracting.

Definitely recommend if you love a strong female lead and captivating plot.

Bad a**

The story, the lead female, the lead male, BAD a**. The narrator... well, let’s just say the way she ended almost EVERY Single Sentence, drove me insane. It was her pattern of story telling, the time she used. It needs work. But all in all she did her job and the story carry’s what she lacks.
Glad I took the time on this one.

Dark and wonderful!

I loved this book from start to finish! Quinn is sassy and takes no sh*t from anybody. She does have a love interest, but it is very tame (at least in this book) and a slow burn. I got completely lost in this world and love the dark, edgy tone that just sucks you in and doesn't let you go! Excuse me while I run off to listen to book two!

I listened to the audiobook version and I give Amy McFadden 4/5 stars. I've listened to other books she's done and liked her more, but for some reason in this one she had this tone in her voice that I didn't love. It may be one of her earlier performances or maybe it was just the way she was trying to play the character, I'm not sure. I almost gave her 3 stars because of this, but she does the different voices so well, that I bumped it up one.

Finally, tough chick to be afraid of

This story was much better than I anticipated. I love the fact that this chic is someone to fear, not a simpering girl to be coddled

Captivating listen

I really enjoyed this story, at first I wasn’t sure how I felt about the narrator but as you get to know the MC you realize how much she fits just right for her. This story definitely keeps you on your toes as you read. Can’t wait to listen to the next one!

fast paced & unapologetic murder

Just love the unapologetic violence. great example of good people capable of extreme violence when pushed, and sometimes just for funzy haha. i personally love these kind of stories. the female lead is never a denzel who needs saving and holds her own. which is refreshing for once. i read alot of complaints about the narrorator, i say she fit the female lead just fine. dont let it stop you to give it a try.

LOVE

Honestly hooked by chapter 3. So many books take a while to get to the point, or OVER describe items. I love how they didn't take long to dive in. The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of were the intros to each chapter. Other than that, I'm about to start the next book.

Amazing narrator! I’m a fan.

I’ve found that poorly narrated fantasy books can be exceptionally awful to follow along with, even if they’re not bad in themselves. I know it’s super subjective but for me, Amy is a great narrator and made this book so engaging I couldn’t stop listening!
The plot is interesting and I like that it explores dark magic and morally grey characters. However I found it to be quite short, moving both too fast and too slow, making the ending very abrupt. I didn’t feel like the relationship between Quinn and Lazarus was developed well enough for the ending to have the payoff it was intended to. I really liked Quinn’s character though so will continue to read the series!
