About this listen

Throne of Glass meets Black Jewels in this twisted yet alluring dark fantasy tale.

Quinn Darkova, freed from the chains of slavery, wants nothing more than vengeance against those who sold her. But with her dark powers on the rise and her ascension nearing, Quinn's blood retribution will have to wait in favor of her immediate survival.

Lazarus Fierte is a nobleman without equal. He's as controlling as he is stubborn, and for the last six years, he's been waiting for a woman to appear - but not just any woman. A Maji of great power, capable of terrible things. She could be the key to everything he holds dear.

His savior...or his destroyer. The only thing he didn't predict was that she would become both.

Contains mature themes.

Fun whimsical story. I liked some of Kel Carpenter’s stories and this was an improvement upon them.
Sometimes I struggle with narration especially with thick US accents. Can be quite jarring to listen to. For example the narrator spoke quite plainly but the last word of each sentence was hard to listen to/understand. Left pronounced as lah-ft, bothered pronounced as bah-thered.

Nice story

It almost could be good but the characters have only a few interactions and then they are uncontrollable around each other. This series would have been better if this was more drawn out. More world/character development and relationship building so you could actually feel the tension rather than the narrator telling you there’s tension but you reader feels nothing toward the characters..

TW: Chapter nine has confronting description of rape. No trigger warnings in the description or at the beginning of the book.
Chapter 12 also has SA!!
Narrator:
Imagine if Summer from Rick and Morty, or Cher from Clueless, was narrating a serious fight scene from Game of Thrones.. it’s a hard listen
The American accent is pretty harsh, and the end of sentences and some words are pronounced weird??? Kind of like a hint of a valley girl accent but only on some words.
“Heart in my chast” (chest) - this might be the most annoying as
“Got out of bad” (bed)
“Bolted for the axit” (exit)
“She veered laft” (left)
“Tinged rad” (red)
“Gasped for brath” (breath)
“Fell to their knees and sarhbed” (sobbed)
“Turning her had” (head)
“He sahd” (said)
“Bars of her sall” (cell)
“Sounds of distrahss” (distress)
“You want me dahd” (dead)
“..Ripped it free from his CHAST, he gasped for BRATH. Using the hilt, she hit him on the HAD” it’s constant and so hard to get past so it really takes away from your ability to enjoy the story.

TW rape and SA

Storyline highlights a strong female character who has survived slavery & other trails as she finally discovers just how powerful she is. She & the main male lead have some tension, I’m waiting for things to really heat up in book 2!

Dark, adventurous, slow burn

This is well thought out and well written. Having said that I didn’t like it. There was nothing to redeem a dark tale. The characters were unlikeable and perhaps not explained well enough for me to accept/understand why their being completely Dark Magic was a good thing. Insufficient efforts to introduce empathy, curiosity, humour, kindness or charm was made for me to purchase the sequel.

Too grim to be enjoyable

Great world building and introduction of characters. Quin develops into her own slowly but steadily and the story starts shaping to build up for the series.

I just couldn’t get past chapter 3. The narrator had such a strong American accident it was too harsh to listen too. It may be a great story but I’ll never know unless I come across in a bookstore. Oh well.

DNF due to the narrator
