Publisher's Summary

When a light aircraft crash-lands at Machrie airport, Daley and Scott rush to the scene. But it soon becomes clear that both occupants of the plane were dead before take-off.... Meanwhile, tending to his lobster creels, Hamish finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, and back at the County Hotel, Annie is beginning to suspect her new boss Ian Macmillan may not be as he first appeared.

A face from the past has returned to haunt Carrie Symington, but is it a case of better the devil you know?

Daley and Scott find themselves battling retired terrorists and radical climate-change activists as the action spills across the North Channel to County Antrim - all under the scrutiny of the Security Services. Faced with so many questions, how will Daley uncover good from bad, right from wrong? The search is on for any other truth.

Oh wonderful

This is I hope not the last of these stories. I cried and can’t believe the sadness I feel. He’s a great writer and of course will listen to David Monteith under water. Love love love this series. I’m going to Scotland as so as the government will slow.

Best one yet

I have followed the series through. Well researched well written and great character development. Narrator is great, really great that the same narrator is used throughout the series.

I love DCI Daley but…

I love Denzil Meyrick’s stories but this last one falls a bit short unfortunately. I think it’s too predictable sometimes. The police are always embroiled in the drama and it always seems to be one of them (or their family) that is caught up in the current drama. I also don’t like that there is always a shocking death. I would prefer they focus on the people and keep it outside of the force, at least not as involved anyway. I look forward to the next one but felt this one was a bit of a let down unfortunately, sorry. As always David Monteath, outstanding performance.

Brilliant series!

Another brilliant DCI Daley book, lots of twists and turns to keep you guessing along with situations that make you chuckle and story lines that make you cry… as always Meyrick keeps you wanting more so you can’t stop listening. Read as always by the very talented David Monteath, no body else can narrate these books. Monteath gives these characters depth and a uniqueness, he breathes life into them.

Dark, Dark Days...

This is as solid as you'd expect from this series by now. I feel like it wasn't that long ago that Jim and co were after terrorists with secret service involvement, so the repetition of that aspect doesn't necessarily work in the story's favour. But ultimately it's about the characters by now, and this one comes with a dark, dark ending.

A welcome return of old friends

I am well bought into the regular characters of this series. These latest exploits of Jim Daley, Brian Scot and old Hamish do not disappoint. Aside from the sympathy for the victims of the featured crimes, there is an unexpectedly sad twist affecting the regular line up.

David Monteath is superb, as ever, and his narration brings additional colour to the main characters. I hope it’s not too long until our next visit to Kinloch!

Too Much Melancholy

Denzil’s weakest book by far and his work is usually tremendous but this isn’t a patch on the others in the series and I’ve got them all and read many times over. The toing and froing was clunky with excessive insignificant details. Just didn’t flow like they usually do. Yes there’s a sad twist at the end for one of the beloved main characters but it was a case of, ‘what but, erm but, why now’? Simply out of context for this character in this way. Sad but baffling at the same time. 6/10

Danger!

This audiobook is so good that it should’ve been banned for lorry drivers. I don’t remember a single mile I’ve driven across north-east yesterday and today 😅
The story is so immersive, well written and the narrator gives all of the characters a unique voice what brings memories from previous books.
Been waiting patiently and it didn’t let me down 👍

Another great book in the series
with a few twists and turns along the way
at one point I was laughing out loud at the patter of Brian Scott.
