About this listen

When newly badged Detective Dave Burrows arrives in the West Australian goldsfield town of Barrabine - a town where prospectors live by their own tough rules - it's exactly where he wants to be. But Melinda, his wife of two weeks, is devastated at leaving behind her family, friends and career.

As Dave investigates reports of mysterious late-night trespassing, a missing person, and guns being drawn on strangers, he must navigate his way in a town where prospectors live by their own rules and find a way to keep his marriage from falling apart.

This could have been a most enjoyable experience if it were not for the narrator. His voice was stilted and overly emphatic, ruining the whole listening experience.
The plot was sufficiently intriguing, the characters believable and the setting authentic. A shame it was spoiled by the voice.
The little novella at the end was extremely powerful!

interesting plot in a rural town setting

Well written full of interesting characters with underlying mysteries that kept me enthralled and loving our dusty red outback

I’m not sure what previous reviewers listened to when they complained about the narrator, I found his narration to be expressive and very easy to listen to.

The story was interesting and very well written, I’ll certainly be listening to more from this author

I really enjoyed this book. I am new to Australia and WA and it is great the get to know it and it's people trough the author's eyes. it is lovely to get to know Dave and recognise parts of the land and customs trough his life. I loved the first book in this series and can't wait to read the rest.

I've listened to all the other books with Dave Burrows as a side character and I think I somehow expected more?

I didn't like this one as much as the previous stories!! I don't know if it's because he's married to somebody else I.e Melinda instead of Kim.

Still a good story. And I didn't pick the ending. It just didn't do it for me as much as Fiona's previous books!!

Onto Without A Doubt now!

I did love that we got the audio book to Farmer Choice at the end but I couldn't work out if it was the whole story or just a teaser..

Good

Only got through to the second chapter at the narration is terrible, wrong words emphasised is the biggest issue making it really hard to follow the story.

Possible the worst narration I have ever heard. Along with a slow boring story.
Don’t waste your time on this one.

So bad
