About this listen

'Smart, bold and so much fun . . . I'm officially a member of the Grace Curtis fan club' AMIE KAUFMAN

The Grand Budapest Hotel in space, Floating Hotel is a hopeful story of misfits, rebels and found family, perfect for fans of Becky Chambers, Martha Wells and Aliette de Bodard.

Welcome to the Grand Abeona Hotel: home of the finest food, the sweetest service, and the very best views the galaxy has to offer. Year round it moves from planet to planet, system to system, pampering guests across the furthest reaches of the milky way. The last word in sub-orbital luxury - and a magnet for intrigue. Intrigues such as:

Why are there love poems in the lobby intray?

How many Imperial spies are currently on board?

What is the true purpose of the Problem Solver's conference?

And perhaps most pertinently - who is driving the ship?

At the centre of these mysteries stands Carl, one time stowaway, longtime manager, devoted caretaker to the hotel. It's the love of his life and the only place he's ever called home. But as forces beyond Carl's comprehension converge on the Abeona, he has to face one final question: when is it time to let go?

An absolute marvel to behold!
PRAISE FOR FLOATING HOTEL
A beautiful novel, magnificently told. Floating Hotel is a story of love, gentle rebellion and mystery pulled through a ragtag bunch of outstanding and dangerous misfits who have all found their way to the stars. Curtis is a master of turning the screw of the story tighter with each page as she inexorably takes us through the lives of the characters to the centre of political intrigue and danger. You will turn every page hoping for one hundred more
This book was a joy to read. It was beautiful and clever, sad and hopeful, subtle and profoundly moving all at once. Grace Curtis has written a novel dripping with humane observation and brilliant craft, weaving together a story that catches you by the heart, even as it pulls you across the galaxy. It is both a heartbreak and a hug in a book; an awesome achievement
Bittersweet and breathtaking, with evocative prose and a scope that's somehow both intimate and galaxy-spanning, FLOATING HOTEL is like the Abeona itself. It invites you to enjoy its atmospheric and multi-layered story and lovable cast at your leisure-and the deeper you get, the less willing you are to let it go. Grace Curtis has a new fan for life!
A funny, humane, and sneaky novel-Floating Hotel is intricate and welcoming as the Grand Abonea around which it revolves, a treasured space in a treacherous universe. Theirs, I mean. Ours too
Curtis has done it again - delivering a high stakes slice of life novel that's bleeding with heart. The underbelly of the Abeona hotel may be rotting with secrets, but like the guests, you'll be too dazzled by its effortless charm to notice. If you read one sci-fi novel this year, make it this one
When I'm rich I'm booking a tour on the Grand Abeona Hotel. Grace Curtis's ability to populate that wonderful, crumbling old relic with characters you really come to love is absolutely exceptional, and Floating Hotel is a joy from arrival to check-out. Mine's a martini, Carl!
Quietly incredible - a constellation of lives, each rendered with warmth and wit, building up a picture of connection, sanctuary, and resistance. The kind of book I want to live in
It is here that Curtis's second novel shines, with the quirky wit of a Wes Anderson film and a deeply grounded and human sense of the importance of found family, this lovable adventure through space seems to be anything other than distant

Fascinating backstories for the characters and the weaving of all threads together at the end

A warm hearted mystery with fabulous characters

I loved this story so much. It was perfectly cosy, going into just the right amount of background for the different characters, leaving you wanting more of their stories, yet still managing to move you along. I want to highlight the narrator did an amazing job, handling all the separate voices perfectly yet not overly done. I will be thinking about the Abeona and her crew for a long time to come. This one is going in my favourites.

Loved this story and narration was perfect.

Initially I kept wondering if I was enjoying this story. By the end I did tremendously. The narration and representation of characters was perfect. An enjoyable read and portrayal of loyalty and legacy,

Surprisingly great

The r universe felt human scale and still intergalactic as well as leaving room for small human emotions and lives showing the effects of the petty human squabbles and empire wide policies.

Originality and pleasant tone without being saccharine

Although a little choppy and disconnected at times. The ending of this really very charming book is rich and lovely. I am happy to have read this.

Satisfyingly rich ending
