Publisher's Summary

A string of suicides. A community in terror. And a chilling conspiracy only DI Amy Winter can crack.

A wave of apparent suicides hits a string of seaside resorts, but when a police officer is named as the latest to die, DI Amy Winter suspects there may be more than mere coincidence to these tragic deaths. But what dark motive could cause someone to throw themselves into the cold depths of the North Sea?

Someone in the community knows more than they are letting on, but Amy’s questions are met with resistance. A group of mysterious teenagers might hold the key, but why are they so afraid to talk? Meanwhile, after the release from prison of her serial killer mother, Amy is fighting her own demons.

In her toughest investigation yet, Amy must confront her dark past if she is to put an end to the carnage. What secret is so terrible that it’s worth killing a police officer for? Amy needs to find the answer, before the sea washes up any more bodies.

Absolutely Fantastic!

Narrator does a great job! FINALLY, a book that ACTUALLY keeps you wondering throughout the entire book!!🥳 Nearly every book in this type of genre that I have read-"CLAIMS" to be the best at keeping you at the edge of your seat or has twists and turns that you will never see coming. (Which let's be honest, 80% of those books are slow, until the end. With those 'big reveals'... being a let down because we figured out the ending before we were halfway through the book!😉) Also, I don't understand how nearly every author has won an award of some kind!? It will say "award winning [___]author "or some version of that. Makes it seem like they hand out these awards like candy on Halloween 🤷‍♀️ HOWEVER, THIS BOOK WOULD DESERVE ONE OF THOSE 'CANDIES.' You might guess one but you will not guess everything in the ending of this book. For once, there is quite a bit going on. It would be wonderful if more authors would do this!!! The author did a fantastic job with this book on all levels. The actual plot line may not be better than the other books in the series but the unfolding, the delivery and the more complex ending (not just having a typical simple ending) how it was laid out ...definitely made this book my favorite above all of them.

Great Book

I’ve enjoyed this series very much. The characters and there daily struggles keep it alive. The life Amy and her sister Sally had endured at the hands of their notorious serial killer parents is something that continues to effect their lives throughout this book. They both are presented with chances to chose different paths for themselves. I look forward to the next book in the series!

Winter has instincts born from a dark past...

Caroline Mitchell is brilliant and the voice of the narrator draws you in even more. I love that Winter seems like a superhero who has serial killer radar and an ability to sense the truth about people. There’s a positivity despite how dark and dreary the circumstances are that surround the characters and settings in the stories. I love that there are multiple mysteries to be solved and with each book we get to peel back the layers of the elusive Grimes family and Winter. I just hate having to wait for the next book to learn more.

Bombshell After Bombshell

I thought I had this book figured out fairly early, but I was utterly wrong. There are several bombshells in this intricately woven story, along with a dark and heartbreaking subplot.

Caroline Mitchell's imagination is brilliant and her stories have all been page turners. This is a series I will continue to enjoy and I hope there are many more brilliant stories to come.

This is the last time

I've been through all the titles in the series, but this is the last. I'm never a fan this type "damaged" detective. There is NO possible way any part of this story would actually happen.

Its ridiculous that I'm supposed to believe her backstory with the serial killer parents. I can ignore those parts. I stuck with it the entire way. It wasn't bad until the few chapters. That's when this took a hard turn into crazy land. There isn't a way to fully explain without giving it away.

Now the first turn, ok, not probable. Tried to keep going and just went swinging for the fences on the crazy. Never rolled my eyes that many times in 4 hours before.

If you don't care about the probability thing you might like it

Not DI Amy Winter's best outing

I really liked the previous three books in this series but this one left me disappointed.

To this point, DI Amy Winter has been strong and determined, if a little rough at times, but generally amiable. However, in "Flesh and Blood" I found her almost unlikable. She makes increasingly callous and classist comments about abused and sex-trafficked children and she can be downright cruel at times. She withholds information from the people she loves, seemingly just to hurt them, and refuses to treat extremely sensitive situations with the care they require and deserve.

Tone deafness aside, the mystery in this one is really tough. Sure, it will keep you guessing until the end, but not because you missed the clues, there just weren't any... Almost all of the clues used to solve the case come as a complete surprise because it's completely new information to the reader.

I was really excited about this book, I'm sorry to say I was let down.

Caroline Mitchell Doe it Again!

This was another smashing success! I wish that this series of books would give birth to an actual television series! As an actor, I visualize these works in full color and surround sound! I'd love to be a part of such gripping storytelling! I on pins and needles awaiting the next book!

Love the whole series

I have listened to the whole D I Amy Winters series and have absolutely loved every single book. I can listen to a book in 2 days because I pop my ear buds in every chance I get!
I love how Caroline's crime thrillers are character driven and not heavy on police procedure and police jargon. There are solid, well thought out and clever plots for each book and believable, real characters that you end up rooting for or despising!
The narrator for these books is the perfect choice. Her voice is so well suited to this genre and she puts the characters and mood across so well.
I can't wait for the next installment as the twist at the end of this book has got me desperate to find out what is going to happen in Amy's life next!

Great Story but wrong Narrator

I have enjoyed all of this series - I have read them all and only listened to this one. Unfortunately I thought this person's voice was totally wrong for this book - not enough depth of emotion or range for characters.

I did feel a couple of issues with some characters were not fully addressed at the end - maybe in the next book.

A step back

This book does not quite reach the heights of previous previous in the Amy Winter series. The author has a bad habit of explaining reaction and beliefs rather than allow interpretation, this way of leading the reader / listener I find lazy and is the reason for mark reduction. The characters in this book don't seem to grow, and the forming relationship between Winter and her boss come across as more teenagers than heads of police. Story is still good, but would advise quality over quantity for further expansion of the series.
