Publisher's Summary

For fans of Bad Blood and Flash Boys, the story of a trading prodigy who amassed $70 million from his childhood bedroom-until the US government accused him of helping trigger an unprecedented market collapse.

On May 6, 2010, financial markets around the world tumbled simultaneously and without warning. In the span of five minutes, a trillion dollars of valuation was lost. The Flash Crash, as it became known, represented the fastest drop in market history. When share values rebounded less than half an hour later, experts around the globe were left perplexed. What had they just witnessed?

Navinder Singh Sarao hardly seemed like a man who would shake the world's financial markets to their core. Raised in a working-class neighbourhood in West London, Nav was a preternaturally gifted trader who played the markets like a computer game. By the age of 30, he had left behind London's trading arcades, working instead out of his childhood home. For years the money poured in. But when lightning-fast electronic traders infiltrated markets and started eating into his profits, Nav built a system of his own to fight back. It worked-until 2015, when the FBI arrived at his door.

Depending on whom you ask, Sarao was a scourge, a symbol of a financial system run horribly amok, or a folk hero-an outsider who took on the tyranny of Wall Street and the high-frequency traders. A real-life financial thriller, Flash Crash uncovers the remarkable, behind-the-scenes narrative of a mystifying market crash, a globe-spanning investigation into international fraud, and the man at the centre of them both.

Critic Reviews

"The UK's pre-eminent chronicler of financial crime." (New Yorker

"Not just a readable, pacey account of an extraordinary individual and his quixotic quest for money he didn’t even spend, but also a troubling exposé of the fragility of our entire financial syste...I loved it." (Oliver Bullough, author of Moneyland)

Amazing story

I loved this recount of a real life event. I particularly liked the effort spent by the author introducing the various characters.

my word just been through this book twice

listen the guy was a trader who found using algorithmic software would do his bidding, he caught the day where he was a whale and did the unthinkable. Broke the rules and his fate was sealed.. nuff respect to the bloke.. killed it continuously and did nothing with it.. shows he will go down in folk law and at the same time will be able to continue his life.. Good luck and best wishes Nav

Outstanding book

Fascinating read highly recommended. Very enjoyable and well narrated. Storyline is much more detail that what you would expect in book on this subject.

Great book ruined by the narration

After reading Flash Boys, I was keen to read this book. It's a good book, although not in the same league as Flash Boys. However, the narration is stilted and amateurish. So much so that it ruins the book.

Brilliant, Thrilling and Easy for a Layperson to Understand

A story far more interesting than the Wolf of Wall Street. The Hound of Hounslow makes for thrilling reading - definitely guilty but victim of the system, Vaughan takes us through the eccentric world of day trading where fortunes are made and lost between the opening and closing bells - who is guilty? You decide...

A fascinating listen

I recalled the story of the hound of hounslow in the news so it was interesting to hear the detail behind the headlines and how Navinder still living with his parents, traded from his bedroom, making millions whilst his parents were unaware. If you enjoy the Michael Lewis books then you will enjoy this.

Amazing

One of my favourite listens! It honestly kept me so hooked and was narrated brilliantly, with the storyline flowing so smoothly all the way through. It had the perfect mix of in depth explanation and easy to understand language so the whole thing was accessible. Highly recommend to anyone interested in the markets or finance, and even people who know nothing about either would enjoy this book.
