Publisher's Summary

From New York Times best-selling author Jon Acuff, a book for those who want relief from always starting and never being done.

Jon Acuff, sought-after speaker and consultant, is the friend who always gives you great advice. With his self-deprecating humor and charm, he has won over hundreds of thousands of followers who come to him for both encouragement and a kick in the pants. Now, after showing you how to reboot your career in his New York Times best seller Do Over, Acuff shows chronic starters how to actually finish their goals in an age of bottomless distractions and endless opportunities.

Acuff knows the reason why many writers' novels go unfinished - it's the same reason why gyms are filled in the first week of January and empty by the end of the month and why people stop learning a new language once they get past the easy parts. It's not just that people lose momentum or get distracted. People give up on projects when they fail to live up to their own high expectations and decide that if they can't do something perfectly, they won't do it at all. If you're going to finish, you have to kill perfectionism.

Drawing on his popular 30 Days of Hustle course, Acuff teaches listeners to short-circuit perfectionism and make it through to the end of a task. Whether it's by "choosing what to bomb" or "cutting a goal in half", he shows listeners how to move past "the day after perfect", get focused, and - finally - finish.

No bullsh@#

I found this book so useful and applicable to every aspect of my life. John uses humour and everyday experiences to get his point across. He is to the point and has the tone of an all round good guy. Reccomend this for people who want to make changes but just need that kick up the butt.

Finish: done and dusted

Useful self help for anyone struggling to get THAT project done!
Yes, a tad self help-ish, but recommended by the fab academic mentor, Kathy Mazak. Perfect PhD encourager.

If you have trouble finishing things, this book is for you

Really useful techniques and identification of the reasons why we don’t finish things (that are important to us). Insightful, fun and worthwhile.

Must Read!

This book is fantastic! If you’re a known (or unknown) perfectionist, then this book is a must read for you! The author is very witty and makes fun of the critical mind, the part that inhibits our growth and stops us from finishing the things we want. He gives really practical and fun advice on how to complete your projects.

I’m telling all my friends about this book as I know it will help many of them! Thanks Jon for an enjoyable book, you have really given me (and many others) a great gift!

One quick answer to nearly all problems of my life

This book is my personal favourite. This has shown why people don’t finish what they start. This is exactly the kind of guidance I wanted. By writing an imperfect book, this book somehow is made perfect. Thanks Jon.

Motivating, insightful, funny

This book is a game changer for me! Easy to listen to but challenging in a way that brings necessary change. It's the first book I've finished in quite some time and I have already purchased Soundtracks so I can keep learning from Jon. Highly Recommended.

If you’ve always given yourself ‘valid’ excuses not to start something, you’re a liar

If you’re anything like me you have always told yourself 100 reasons why you’re just not quite ready to finish that new project.

For me, it’s writing regular articles on my small business blog. I bought my domain and Wordpress website over a year ago and there it still sits today, haunting me. I have an about page and one blog post that is still sitting in draft.

See I’m what Jon refers to in his book as a ‘starter’. I have lots of great business ideas and love the excitement of all the research at the initial start phase of a project. Except my research phase usually starts out with a YouTube clip on something like how to write a blog and then somehow ends up with me watching Susan Boyle’s, Britain’s Got Talent audition. You know, the one we’re she walks on stage looking like a complete nutter only to stun everyone with the most beautiful version of I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables. And at the after you’ve spent 5 minutes crying like a school girl you stand up yelling at your computer screen “take that all you haters!”

What the hell does this have to do with Jon’s book Finish? Well, what I realised was my ‘Subo’ YouTube spirals are in fact my perfectionist mind giving me yet another excuse not to work on my blog. See, Im constantly doubting my abilities to write and telling myself things like “you’re an accountant, not a writer. Get back behind the safety of those spreadsheets and out of the lime light of a business blog nerd boy”.

to confirm those doubts I’ll do things like look at other similar business blogs such as Seth Godin’s and say to myself “I could never write as good as that or his website looks amazing I could never make my website look that good”. But that’s just my perfectionist brain again giving me another excuse why I shouldn’t put myself out there.

Jon teaches you that another reason we don’t finish a project is because we are so scared about putting ourselves out there. Open for the whole world to judge. See, no one can judge you if you just fly under the radar, sitting at home watching Netflix.

In this book, Jon helps you identify all these demons that are stopping you from following through on you’re desired projects. I believe Self awareness is half the battle. Now when I have doubts I have a bit of a chuckle in my mind because I know it’s just perfectionism creeping it’s ugly head in.

Jon then goes on to give you some great tips, tools and exercises to slay these demons so you can start AND finish your projects.

Witty Wisdom

Driving along in my car, there's always a smile on my face and occasionally even an out-loud chuckle. This new read from Jon Acuff brings joy on so many levels. Not only is it humorous to listen to, but also sets you free from the hard-core, 'never-enough' grind of traditional goal setting mythology. Jon personifies perfectionism as the villain in this story and delivers a fresh take on strategies to beat him/her back and achieve your goals with some proven but counter-intuitive strategies. I highly recommend FINISH to anyone who has struggled to live up to their own expectations and is looking to get more done in the long term.
