Der schwermütige Edgar Alan Poe ringt damit nicht wieder zum Alkoholiker zu werden. Als er eines Abends in einem Pariser Nachtklub rückfällig wird, lernt er die wunderschöne Sängerin Sandrine kennen, in die er sich Hals über Kopf verliebt. Schnell wird ihm klar, dass Sandrine die Braut eines gefürchteten Pariser Verbrecherkönigs ist. Er will sie aus dessen Klauen befreien und ignoriert Dupins Einwände und Zweifel. Doch als er zu Sandrines "Rettung" eilt, findet er lediglich die Leiche des ermordeten Bandenchefs vor und wird prompt als vermeintlicher Täter verhaftet. Dupin heftet sich daraufhin an Sandrines Fersen, um die Unschuld seines Freundes zu beweisen und ihn vor dem Strick zu bewahren.
