Publisher's Summary

Some years ago, Cyrus Barker matched wits with Sebastian Nightwine, an aristocrat and sociopath, and in exposing his evil, sent Nightwine fleeing to hide from justice somewhere in the far corners of the earth. The last thing Barker ever expected was to encounter Nightwine again - but the British government, believing they need Nightwine's help, has granted him immunity for his past crimes, and brought him back to London.

Nightwine, however, has more on his mind than redemption - and as Barker and Llewellyn set out to uncover and thwart Nightwine's real scheme, they find themselves in the gravest danger of their lives.

Still a GREAT series!

Barker running as a fugitive throughout London and being out smarted is too exciting to put down. Llewelyn bearing the weight of Barker’s predicament, diligent works to exonerate Barker’s circumstances. Llewelyn cannot compete with Barker cognitive skills or his network, but Llewelyn does have skills.

This is still the best historical mystery series.

Very enjoyable.

A bit predictable for a spell when the attractive lady shows up, but it redeems itself. Lots of fighting in this one. I'm amazed that a fight can be written at all, let alone so well that you can picture it.

A bit different

I have enjoyed the entire series so far. This one had less Cyrus and more Thomas, which in one way is wonderful to see how Thomas is growing into his own but less Cyrus isn't something i want. What's most entertaining to me is the interaction between these extremely different characters.
I enjoy that Thomas is learning a great deal from Cyrus but also how he makes Cyrus actually see and accept things from Thomas's point of view.
Everyone who enjoys this series, will continue to due so, greatly.

Excellent novel

With only a few missteps concerning Llewellyn's sporadic lack of intelligence and faulty memory, this is one of (if not) the best B&L novel in the series to date. The reader's performance, as always, is excellent and the novel is fast-paced, clever, and filled with suspense. Especially enjoyable was the lack of unnecessary blurb mislabeled as prologue that has plagued too many of the other novels in this series. Highly recommended!

What a whirlwind! A 5 star book!

I love this series and this book was fabulous. The narration was once again superb, each "voice" perfect and exacting for each character. Oh, the plot lines and the characters! I kept saying, "OMG, OMG, OMG" throughout the book because couldn't believe what was happening. The book also ends on a major cliffhanger. There's one big problem with this series--Tom needs to stop thinking with his OTHER head. Gosh, he acts like a 10 year old girl at a boyband concert. After he finds his lady love's assassin kit, he still gets all dreamy about her "slender " neck and dainty feet... C'MON MAN! This girl was hired to kill you. Thomas, grow up and think with the brain between your ears, not the one between your legs.

Disappointed that Cyrus Barker didn’t appear as often as usual

The second main character, Cyrus Barker isn’t as nearly as involved as he is in the other Barker and Llewelyn books. Disappointing But the information gained from the book is important to the rest of the series. The narration is excellent as always

Another great tale of action and intrigue in Victorian London with the usual cast of characters.

I am a big fan of the series. I enjoy the historic detail of this series, the characters, the witty dialogue and the action. The narrator is quite good at portraying the caracters.

Entertaining

This series is uneven in quality. The Limehouse one and one other were really good - plot, writing, characters. In this one, Thomas has the character Llewelyn asking stupid questions and whining too much and the plot isn't as tight and interesting. Still, as I said above, it is entertaining and better than a lot of other books of this relatively lighthearted sleuthing nature.

Young Adult?

I listened to most of this, but lost interest and didn't finish. It's quite well written but very formulaic and therefore rather uninteresting. I found the writing style simplistic and repetitive, overall it felt like a children's story. The narration is adequate, though rather patronising. Accents are not the narrator's strongest skill.
