About this listen

Broadcaster Clara Amfo and fashion historian Amber Butchart uncover the secret history of fashion, from the Middle Ages to the 20th Century.

But this isn't just about what we wore, but who we were, and who we are today. This series will look at the legacy fashion has left us, from rules that still regulate dress around gender and class, to its influence on feminism, civil rights, and the environment.

  • Ep. 1: Dressing to Express
    Nov 24 2020

We start with the Vikings and the early frontiers of style. But soon the 'rules of fashion' become a force for control, with strict class laws governing everything from the colours you could wear, to the pointiness of your shoes.

  • Ep. 2: Cross-Dressing
    Nov 24 2020

Gender-defying fashionistas first started to capture the popular imagination in Elizabethan England. Shakespeare's plays see male actors dressing as female characters dressing as male characters. And rebellious Mary Frith defies gender norms winning a £20 bet by riding from Charing Cross to Shoreditch dressed as man.

We see the rise of the actress as a fashion icon in the 18th century. Frances Abington becomes known as the 'fashion doctor' and grows to fame as the first celebrity stylist. However, fears about working class people dressing above their station quickly become a national obsession.

If you're new to the world of fashion history, you will enjoy this podcast. The hosts nailed each episode and do a great job of marrying past trends and ideas with contemporary fashion. Great work! If you're keen to explore fashion history further, I recommend watching Amber Butchart's "A Stich in Time".

Really enjoyable fashion doco. I've learnt a lot and feel greater appreciation for humanity's fashion explorations throughout history. As usual it's creativity, confidence and diversity that have shaped the most striking looks and trends. If there's a season 2 I'd love to hear more about the historical fashion of other countries. Great job to Clara and Amber!

My new favourite podcast, this is so much more than fashion! I loved every episode and learnt about history and political movements from an entirely new perspective.

A must listen!

While there was no in depth look into particular trends this series covers everything briefly in a semi-informative way. The styles discussed focused on fashion in London from mid century to 19th century and American fashion from the 19th to 20th century.

Fun series to have on in the car listening to Clara and Amber chat about fashion and its significance in society then and now.

I don't understand the point of having two presenters, as Amber always agrees with everything Clara says. She doesn't add anything interesting, or even just anything at all, to the conversation, she simply "totally agree"s with every opinion. A real struggle to get through, but I don't like leaving things unfinished.
