Charlotte North’s narration is so compelling that the listener immediately falls into the world created by Harper Bliss. This one is set in a small town in Texas. Two middle aged women are looking for love, both coming at it from a different direction. Tess lived in the small country town her whole life and has trouble finding another lesbian in her small world. Laura comes from a shattering situation in Chicago and feels she is ‘damaged goods’. How they fall in love is the journey you take with them in this sweet story of loss and finding happiness.

I get the importance of this topic and appreciate the bravery taken to build a love story around brokenness...but there's just too much....We have the sad parent story, the sad aunt story and the sad previous relationship. Goodness this Laura is intense for good reason but its a lot for one love story.... Just two other things troubled me. Tess's character ark doesn't really develop. In the period when Laura is working through things, I think real Tess would be questioning her own desirability...inability to drive Laura towards a healing. I like that we learn about the patience required to support someone through this process but by not touching on Tess and her own journey, she's made to seem so co dependent but also not quite real. I can tell you through experience that someone struggling with your timing as you deal through any rough patch isn't like this and it isn't about someone being unworthy of you etc. Everyone has stuff...insecurities etc. In romance we idealise...Tess would be feeling inadequate. The second thing that disturbed me was that following two really passionate scenes the author goes straight back towards Laura's memories. Arousal to ugliness is a hard cold bucket of water with no time to relish the new development. ..I'll try the other free book to decide if I'd be wiling to pay for this prolific author...but this one feels heavy.
