En tidig söndagsmorgon får ambulanssjuksköterskan Erik Sandström ett larm om en medvetslös man på tågstationen i Gävle. Mannen visar sig vara död och i svalget har någon placerat en ung flickas ID-kort. Samtidigt får Inger Pålsson vid Falupolisen uppgifter om en död man på ett tåg i Falun. På platsen påträffas en italiensk springkniv som för tankarna till ett 17 år gammalt flickmord som hon utredde tillsammans med Birger Andréasson vid Gävlepolisen. Det är få fall som håller den numera pensionerade kriminalkommissarien Birger Andréasson vaken om nätterna, men mordet på 12-åriga Lisa går inte att få bort ur tankarna. Fallet hade förblivit ouppklarat och den hänsynslöse mördaren hade hållit sig på avstånd. Tills nu.
