About this listen

Writer/director/producer Justine Bateman examines the aggressive ways that society reacts to the aging of women's faces.

Face is a book of fictional vignettes that examines the fear and vestigial evolutionary habits that have caused women and men to cultivate the imagined reality that older women’s faces are unattractive, undesirable, and something to be "fixed".

Based on "older face" experiences of the author, Justine Bateman, and those of dozens of women and men she interviewed, the book presents the listener with the many root causes for society’s often negative attitudes toward women’s older faces. In doing so, Bateman rejects those ingrained assumptions about the necessity of fixing older women’s faces, suggesting that we move on from judging someone’s worth based on the condition of her face.

With impassioned prose and a laser-sharp eye, Bateman argues that a woman's confidence should grow as she ages, not be destroyed by society's misled attitude about that one square foot of skin.

I enjoyed this collection of vignettes. Most resonated on some level.
An exploration of what it means to be a woman who is getting older. If you're starting to stress about that, listen to/read this and own your power!

This book most definitely provides food for thought. definitely not a pretty look at ageing from a female perspective, and delivers some resonating moments that are not always comfortable. There feels like an underlying anger in the stories and narrating, and a lot of feels like it may have come from the personal experiences of the author. Personally , I felt like there was an underlying narrative that taking steps to modify your appearance was something to be ashamed of, which I don't agree with. Would still recommend a listen.

Thank you Justine, for narrating your own work and for bringing it to life with your own style and expression.

The collection of stories are engaging and poignant. They convey a widely accepted truth against a back drop of lies - a different kind of pandemic.

Hard truths made palatable by Justine's skilled story telling with well timed sardonic humour and irony. The edges of harsh reality are deftly airbrushed (ok - I had to) with compassion and a fierce resolve.

Bravo!

Thoroughly enjoyable.

Such a variety of woman’s experiences , some took the wind right out of me as I saw myself and my internal thoughts

A must for every one

This book hits so many home truths on a personal level. Hearing that it is a universal theme among all women, not just us old crones is (for me) extremely comforting. Perfect narration by the author and great concept to have the different stories of women highlighting our struggle and love hate relationship with just over 1 foot of skin. Brilliant and highly recommend.
