Publisher's Summary

Even for an average citizen, a love triangle is dangerous business. For assassin John Rainn - "one of the most compelling lead characters in the genre" (USA Today) it's going to be downright deadly.

When Rain learns that his former lover, Midori, has been raising their child in New York, Rain senses a chance for reconciliation, perhaps even for redemption. But Midori and the child are being watched by Rain's enemies, and Rain's sudden appearance puts them in terrible danger. To save them, Rain is forced to use the same deadly talents he had been hoping to leave behind. With the help of Tatsu, his one-time nemesis in the Japanese FBI; and Dox, the former Marine sniper whose good ol' boy persona masks a killer as deadly as Rain himself, Rain races against time to bring his enemies into the open and eliminate them forever. But to finish the job, he'll need one more ally: Mossad operative Delilah, a woman for whom Rain's hopes with Midori represent an altogether different kind of threat....

Superb Book!

In 2012 and 2013 Barry Eisler republished the first six novels in his John Rain series with new titles. Extermis, John Rain Book 5, was originally titled The Last Assassin.

Extremis is one of Eisler's best novels and is a auperb action thriller. It is filled with action and suspense. It also shows more than any other book in the series the humanity and the emotional side of John Rain. I love this book and recommend it without qualification. Earlier books in the series provide some helpful background on Rain, Dox, Madori, Dalilah, ,and other characters, but Extremis provides sufficient background that reading the earlier books in the series is unnecessary.

When Eisler retitled the books, he also changed the narrator of the audiobooks to himself, an excellent improvement.

Eisler is a big name author of thrillers. He and other authors including J. A. (Joe) Konrath were leaders in the movement toward self publishing. All lovers of reading owe them a debt of gratitude for reducing the cost of books at retail. Previously unknown authors who could not get published, such as the superb British author Mark Dawson, owe them an even larger debt. Thank you Barry!

Love The Angst in Rain

If you could sum up Extremis in three words, what would they be?

Exciting, compelling, and sad.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Extremis?

When John returns to New York to save Midori only to be confronted at the airport by two thugs. Hope did they know? He disposes of them only to be turhed away by Midori. When he realizes what has happened to,his carefully constructed but impossible dream, it is sad. Then he returns to find his friend dying. The ending gives hope though.

Which scene was your favorite?

The one where it dawns on him that there is life and it is up to him to find it. Dox and Delilah are waiting.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Assassins are human. Check Out Rains.

Any additional comments?

I love Barry Eisler's narration.

Barry is superb. His stories are involved and interesting. I love reading books where I learn something. He intertwines real life events and gives you a real flavor of the country and people. On to the next in the series.

I enjoy this series!

The John Rain stories are quite unique from others that I've read and write enjoyable!

While The author's performance isn't quite up to par with some of the master audio book performers, it's still very good!

There were two problems I noticed with editing where the same 30 seconds or so repeated. I thought my phone was freaking out the first time, but then it happened again later. Not a big deal, but maybe that could be fixed.

Another great book by Barry Eisler

I started with All the Devils and really liked it. Quickly decided to go back and start with the first John Rain book and go from there. I’ve enjoyed each one. The character development in Extremis was awesome.

How to Love an Assassin

When I read the first book in this series I thought these books were written for macho men who like blood and killing. After reading the first 5 books, I can say that they can appeal to women as well. I have loved seeing John Raines personal evolution as he tries to balance a “normal” life with the dark life he leads. I am becoming “friends” with the characters and feel a kinship with them. Can’t wait for the next book. The author, Barry Eisler, is a perfect narrator for his books.

I liked the John Rain character from the start but book 4 and 5 saw the full development and personal side of the character which had me hooked from the start. Loved it!

Yet another great book!

I'm in love with this series. The characters are so dynamic and come to life as Barry reads and takes on the personality of each memorable character.

I'm ready for the next one, never a break in between. I'll be saddened when I'm finished with this series. John Rain is a spectacular man of action, but hope to find more great books read by Barry Eisler.

Barry Eisler has the perfect tone of voice, accents and splendid use of languages from abroad. A+ from me!

A gripping episode in this series

The John Rain series of books gets better and better. The author reads his own work brilliantly. I really care about the main characters now and despite the extreme violence which punctuates the books and the fascinating detailed explanations of an assassin's tradecraft, it is the complex relationships, themes of conflicting loyalties and emerging comradeship that underpin the story which make Extremis in particular - and the John Rain books in general - so compelling. I will certainly be reading and listening to the next tale soonest!
