Publisher's Summary

Alberich had spent most of his youth in the Karsite military schools training to be an officer. As the son of an impoverished mother, he had no other career choice open to him. And Alberich had risen in the ranks with almost unnatural speed. He developed expertise with many weapons and excelled in academic subjects with an ease that was the envy of his classmates. But in fact, the reclusive Alberich studied long and hard, pushing himself ruthlessly.

In battle, Alberich had always had a sort of "sixth sense" about things that were about to happen - when and from where the enemy would attack. Instinctively, he has this ability, for the Sunpriests kept careful watch for anyone exhibiting "demon powers" that were the hallmark of Karse's greatest enemy - the witch nation of Valdemar. Those they caught were "cleansed" in the fires of Vkandis Sunlord.

Both Alberich's skill and secret served him well in the army of Karse, and when Alberich became one of Karse's youngest captains, he received a special gift - a powerful white stallion "liberated" from the enemy. But this honor was merely a distraction, for the Sunpriests had laid a trap that even Alberich's strange foresight could not predict....

Narrator might be an issue

If you are one of those people who have to have the names of things pronounced properly, you’re likely to hate this narrator. While he has a pleasant voice, he constantly mispronounced “Karse” and “Karsite”. This would be a minor issue if the words weren’t used almost constantly throughout the book. He also doesn’t do voices very well which can lead to some confusion with the dialogue. I’m rather disappointed as this is one of my favorite Valdemar books. If that sort of thing doesn’t bother you, you should try it as it’s a great story.

Always one of my favorites and it didn’t disappoint

I read the books years ago and the audiobook just ads to an already great story. I truly liked the narrators interpretation (despite having had a few names set differently in my head). Funny how listening to the book brings out details I didn’t focus on when I read it (in a good way). Happy to see We don’t have to wait too long for book 2... it’s already preordered.

Exceptional as always

Thoroughly enjoyed the story. Mercedes Lackey is a master of story telling and the Valdemar series is one that I have read and reread. I will continue to follow on Audible as the books are released.

great!

I was so glad to see this is audible finally. I do hope they release the second volume soon. the narrator was fantastic even though he pronounced (stupid spellcheck) his country different from all the other narrators.

Disappointing narration

This is one of my favourite Valdemar books, giving the back story of how the Karsite Weaponsmaster became a Herald, but it was sadly spoiled by the weird pronunciation of Alberich, Karse and especially collegium - it is coll eej ium, not coll egg ium. Very disappointing.

Rather boring

Sorry, I like most of hers but this was struggle to finish. Too much description of characters feelings and thoughts and not enough action. I found Joust rather the same, in fact I gave up with that one! This is a bit better although I did fast forward through some of it.
