Publisher's Summary

Two men haunted by the same ghost...

Falling for "the other man" in my marriage was never part of the plan. Then again, according to Nicolae Ursache, I am the other man, and human wedding vows don't apply. Not to werewolves.

Nicolae is a smug, arrogant alpha male stereotype - and I do mean alpha in the literal sense - but when the same people who killed my wife kidnap my teenage daughter, he's my only chance at getting her back. The fact that Nicolae was my wife's rightful mate means that we share a mutual interest in bringing Ellie home, but I never could've imagined how he planned to do it.

I will do anything to protect my daughter. Even if it means becoming the plaything, or worse, of the man I loathe most.

This dark shifter romance contains material suitable for adult audiences only. It is a standalone with full resolution.

A pleasant surprise

It’s not a genre I thought I would ever be interested in but I really enjoyed this book and narration. I bought it because I like Kirt Graves’ narration. He didn’t disappoint. A great story that was well paced with characters I truly enjoyed getting to know. I’m looking forward to the next in the series.

Take a deep breath

They say you should never judge a book by its cover. Yet time and again I find myself guilty of doing just that. I did that with this book. When it was released I looked at the cover and thought that it just wasn't for me, it seemed too dark, possibly twisted, too out there. So I wrote it off and put it out of my mind. As time passed this book kept coming up, I kept seeing these raving reviews of the story and the narration, and I just had to know for myself what the hype was about. So for better of worse I started listening... So from my preconceived notions, I expected this book to be dark and different and possibly a bit twisted. That wasn't really the case. It was in no way a fluffy or sweet read but it wasn't overly angsty or dark either. It begins with a murder, an unresolved one at that. In order to start over Jack and his daughter Ellie moves to a new town in the hopes to start over. Only tragedy strikes again. Hours after arriving to their new home Ellie is kidnapped. With no leads to go on Jack is getting more and more desperate to find her. When his late wife's lover enters the picture with information of not only Elle's whereabouts but also information on who killed his wife, Jack has no other option than to follow the man he's despised for so long. Only the secrets that he reveals change his world forever. Not only does werewolves exists, but his daughter and late wife belongs to that world. It came as no surprise that there was no love lost between Jack and Nicolae in the beginning. I mean how could there be? Both betrayed by the woman that they thought belonged to them. That being said and knowing that werewolf societies are different from humans ones. I still couldn't stand Nicolae. His condescending nature really got on my nerve. I know that werewolves have their own hierarchy and live by their own rules and customs, but he got on my nerves just too much. Sure, Jack wasn't flawless either, but he didn't put the blame where it didn't belong or tried to belittle others to make himself feel better. So from that you might think that I totally hated this book, but that's not true. That's not true at all. Sure, the beginning of the book didn't wow me, that's true. But around the halfway mark, something happened and got really sucked in. The intrigues, the plotting, the deals made. I needed to know more. Sure the transition from mortal enemies to being in love was too quick for my tastes and I just couldn't believe in Jack and Nicolae that quickly - but hey, that might be just me. There was a lot of twists and turns, especially in the end that really kept things interesting and the listener on their toes, so you might want to pay attention. Kirt Graves is a very talented narrator no question about it. He brings the story to another level. The voices he has for the different characters makes it easy for the listener to follow along the story. Add in the accents and emotions and he's a winner. I only have one small issue, and that's the pace. Gravess narration is much to slow for my preferences, but you know what? Speeding up the narration easily remedies that and then you can just happily focusing on the story. This book was a gamble, and one that really paid off. It wasn't what I expected, in the very best ways. It will be interesting to know what else Abernathy has up his sleeve. A copy of this book was generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review for Love Bytes

Amazing narrator and an intense story

I am so excited that Exhale is finally available on audible. This book is an extraordinary tale of a father’s love with shapeshifter mate issues thrown into the mix. When I saw that Kurt Graves was narrator (I highly recommend Wolfsong by TJ Klune) I knew that Jack would be wonderfully portrayed. The relationship between Jack and Nicolai is fraught and dark but the writing and genre overcomes some of the love/hate issues.....eventually. But Jack’s love for his daughter keeps this tale going. The main character is a man of great integrity and plenty of self-deprecation. Kirt Graves does an amazing job portraying all characters. Totally worth a credit and I can’t wait for the next book to be released.

The book just got better!

I loved this book when I read it on my kindle, probably one of my top 10 favorites. So to see Kirt Graves, my absolute favorite narrator, doing this book made my cry of happiness! This shifter story is really well put together and I like how Jack and Nick goes from hating each other, to love so strong they would die for each other. I love the charachters and with Graves narration it just got so much better! #LGBTQ #Werewolves #Romance #FatherAndDaughter #Rumania #HappyEnding #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

Um. Wow. I'm Impressed.

I dont write reviews often, but... guys. The narrator. THE NARRATOR. This man consistently did an accent for the main character, as well as most of the characters in this book. I'm so impressed and I might have a new favorite narrator. He was that good. The story was also reaaaaaally good. It has a slightly darker take on werewolf culture, but honestly, it's mostly culture information rather than a big scene. If you like shifter m/m romance at all, GET THIS BOOK. I'm on my way to get the next book... and possibly everything by this narrator.

Shifters Story But With A Whole Different Twist

This is my first read by Joel Abernathy. One really shouldn't judge a book by its cover. I stumbled upon this book while browsing Kindle Unlimited selection and when I read the blurb, I got hooked. It is not a typical premise. Sure, shifters and their mates are a given. But what about when you fall in love with your deceased wife's betrothed? And that your deceased wife was a shifter? And she was to be mated to a hot alpha wolf who showed up on your doorstep? See, that's what hooked me. The story started in a small mining town setting and somehow the story shifted (ha! no pun) location and much of the story unfolded in Europe. Nicolae at first, was a major douche. He was an ass towards Jack. But somehow I can understand where he's coming from because Jack was the one who got to marry his betrothed after all. I think there was already a simmering attraction and once they've realized how much they've been manipulated by Jack's wife, their romance unfolded. Jack, oh I love Jack. He was the most real and relate-able character in this book. His love for his daughter, his selflessness in making sure he can provide for his family. This book made me smile, it made me sad, it made me mad. But also, it made me happy for Jack and Nicolae. Kirt Graves did a good job with his narration. Jack's accent? Sexy!

Interesting storyline

I really liked this storyline. It wasn’t totally new but had a few new twists. Good background and layout for future books if author wants to continue. First time reader of Joel Abernathy and found I would like to read more by him.

Best audio book I’ve listened to.

I have bought at least 30 audiobooks in the past 3 years and this was the best by far. The narrator was excellent!!! And he did awesome with all the accents. And I know people don’t like Nicoli, but damn he grew on me so much. I adored Andre and Jack was my favorite by far. I’m gonna listen to this until I’m sick of it

Hot,Dark,Love

Once again Kirt Graves narration knocks me out. The book itself was so full of life. Overwhelming emotionally and sometimes dark the story of these two lovers makes you feel like you have watched them in your own neighborhood. Kirt brought them to life. The story drug me in. Nick and Jack will now hold a special place in my life and I can’t wait to read and hopefully hear more. #sogood. #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

Nice

CAUGHT in a war, life built on lies and secrets. Jack, simple and easy in all the ways that is normal and bland. He is thrust into a world of wolves and magic, truth and revelations. Jack is a coal miner who literally work himself into an early grave. He is self sacrificing in every way more importantly he is unashamed of who he is and what he has to do in order to save the ones he love. I liked this because it's a mix of old tradition and new age circumstances. We have a trans teenage, a gay father, a pansexual male Alpha, interesting SCs, twists and turns around every truth.

A really terrific book!

This book is great, the story is interesting, different, and I was glued from the start. There wasn’t a dull or slow moment and I found it thrilling. I am glad there will be a book two, hopefully soon. And I liked the narrator a lot.

Unexpected delight

Shifter romances are often a bit of a replicated drag and I struggle to finish them. I still keep trying them though because sometimes there’s a gem. This was an unexpected delight! Enjoyed it a lot. Please bring out more by this author on Audible. I gather they also write under the name L.C. Davis but there’s no books under that name on here either. If you like this book I’d recommend the Spectr series by Jordan L. Hawk. You can get the first series (25 hours) for one credit which isn’t bad. That series was an unexpected surprise too.

Good book but rushed ending

The characters were really well done but it just felt like the ending was a bit rushed, would have liked to have more to read.

Top-notch narration

I have already read and enjoyed this book, but I felt the narration lifted it even further. Kirt Graves did a great job with the accents, it was always clear who was speaking, and he has just the right gravel for the sexy parts. He also nails the emotion - I was actually sobbing near the end. Really great performance.

loved it

i used this book as my running companion i got totally lost in the story and didn't even notice how long i was running for.. the story is not completely unique as there are similar stories out there but there are some nice twists that even i didn't expect and the pain and the passion made me eager to see how it all worked out in the end! i totally recommend this book and the narrator had a very sexy drawl i could listen to all day! ... oh yh i did!!
