Publisher's Summary

It was not unusual to find the beautiful bronzed body of the sun-loving Arlena Stuart stretched out on a beach, face down. Only, on this occasion, there was no sun...she had been strangled.

Ever since Arlena's arrival at the resort, Hercule Poirot had detected sexual tension in the seaside air. But could this apparent 'crime of passion' have been something more evil and premeditated altogether?

Evil Excellence.

Delightful. Have already read the book and seen the tv series many times over but still I found myself trying to find extra time between work and family commitments to listen in. David Suchet is pure brilliance in his character renditions. Evil Under the Sun was a whole lot of fun to listen to. Even if you know the ending.

Evil under the Sun.

Having David Sucker act as Poirot is wonderful. You feel immersed in the story. Agatha Christie has all these red herrings and nuances to the plot it makes this Audible great to listen to.

Historical Buff.

uneven character performance

in general a good listen , however David Suchet, seemed to struggle with the female characters, they were far less convincing than the male .

OK

Shame Hugh Fraser hadn’t narrated this. I haven’t seen more than a few minutes in passing of the TV adaptations with David Suchet and HF, so I don’t have any preconception that HF is “only” the dim stooge to DS.
DS makes many voices comic, exaggerated, even for light fiction like this. Still I don’t like much of the current ultra-violent crime fiction, especially as bedtime listening. Far better a sanitised assassination of an unpleasant person with a minimum of gore.

Dreadful narration

Unfortunately I could not enjoy the book fully as I find narration by David Suchet just dreadful. He is obviously a very talented actor and can read books amazingly well, however, some characters portrayed by him have such annoying undertones to their voices, not to mention a surprise increase in volume all of a sudden, that I really could not enjoy this book fully. Actually more than that, portrayal of mrs Gardener made me want to actually rip off headphones off my head and have me a headache. At the beginning, where characters are introduced, during the conversation scene, I had to stop the book and decide whether to actually continue with it. Truly dreadful annoying screechy voices. As some other reviewers mentioned, some characters sound almost comic, which is kind of spoiling the experience as well. This seems to be the trait to every Christie’s book I listed so far, read by him, and I will not be buying another one.

David Suchet is fantastic

The delivery and performance is absolutely spot on. It's not one of Christie's best works but Suchet makes it worth a listen. Slow in places but a good afternoon listen.

Sun, sea and murder - what more do you need?

A well known book by Agatha Christie which has been dramatised on TV as well as film. While on holiday Hercule Poirot encounters death and mystery when wealthy actress Arlena Marshall is discovered dead on beach on their holiday island. Through a series of deduction Poirot examines the possible suspects amongst them are; the forgiving husband, downtrodden and bullied step-daughter, wife of the man Arlena is ‘secretly’ dating or maybe the reverend who sees evil around her.

Having read the book before and watched the various dramatisations many times, the events and big reveal was of no surprise however this did not detract from my enjoyment of listening to this audiobook. A particular joy of this reading was the performance of the brilliant David Suchet who will always be ‘Hercule Poirot’ to me despite others who may come along.
