Publisher's Summary

End of Watch is a compelling and chilling suspense novel which sees retired detective Bill Hodges back on the trail of his nemesis, Brady Hartsfield, the criminal the press called The Mercedes Killer.

Foiled in his attempt to commit a second mass murder, Hartsfield is confined to a hospital brain-injury unit in a seemingly unresponsive state. But all is not what it seems: Brady is able to influence both his physician and the hospital librarian to commit crimes in the outside world.

Now the technological genius has created a hypnotic electronic fishing game which compels users to commit suicide, and he is determined to target the three people who put him in hospital: Hodges and his sidekicks, Holly and Jerome.

Compelling, Immersive , Stunning,

A compelling and Immersive experience. Narrated with true pathos and drama. Stephen King's mastery of language is given due tribute here.

Disappointed

Loved the first two books but found this one disappointing. The story line is unconvincing and lacks the interest the first two books had. Found it difficult to enjoy.

The of watch...

I enjoyed this book for its (yet again) great performance and having listened to Book 1&2 in the series. But I started to get annoyed with the need of having to explain all references to previous books in detail. It also became very predictable...

A reasonably enjoyable listen.

The final installment of the trilogy is a departure from the more gritty realism of the first two.
A slight dip into abstract science fiction is not what I came to expect from this series. Although the story was the weakest of the three, the conclusion was satisfactory. The performance is EXCELLENT!!! Love listening to this reader bring the characters to life.

Mr King is a wonderful storyteller

I thoroughly enjoyed this series. They never do enough justice to the story telling on screen and although I watch every movie and tv series, there’s nothing like the original written word in the end.

I find his weird ageist attitude -well weird!! Considering the age of the author, his descriptions of “old” people fall into a very young span as far as I’m concerned. But if that’s my only criticism, I guess we’re going okay.

disappointed

spoilers!!
Wish I could give this a 2.5. End of watch was my least favourite in the Hodges trilogy. At the end of finders keepers I was interested in how King would go about the telekinesis he hinted at... unfortunately I found myself cringing and rolling my eyes at "z boy", "zappits" and the whole hypnosis suicide. It felt so corny and did not fit the feel of the previous 2 books. The ending was predictable...of course Jahrome was going to save the day some how....again I eye rolled.

the performance was good through out the trilogy with holly's voice being the only thing I did not like. found it extremely annoying.

End of a series

SK is a master of character development his brevity of phrase keeps the pace moving . I loved the characters of Holly and Jerome as supporting cast to Bill Hodges both likeable characters that added to the tapestry of the story . My only comment is that the narrative could have been improved by omitting the frequent recaps of the previous two novels. The recaps stalled the natural pace of the story. The narration was top notch.

Satisfying Endings.

This novel is a nice conclusion the 3 part book series centred around Bill. However, the story continues is "The Outsider" and the short story "If It Bleeds". Both are well written but I think I am gonna miss Brady.

Great narration

The trilogy concludes with the resurrection of the evil Mercedes Man. Typically great characters, including the villains. The narration was excellent, especially for Holly, who is on the autistic spectrum.

Entertaining series

A good end to the trilogy, it became a little more 'out there' in true King fashion. Enjoyable overall.

Not the best of King

I loved Will's performance. The story though was wanting and I forced myself to just complete it because it is a Stephen King novel. I loved his work growing up but am not sure why this series was hard for me to love. I listened to all three books. I love the second one better than the first and this last one.
I found the Mountain Man series by Keith C Blackmore a much better book by far compared to this book by King.

Predictable right from the beginning...

Not one of the best works of Stephen King. Predictable right from the beginning. Narration was good like the first two books. But storyline fell short of attracting attention right from the beginning. No suspense. No twists.

The end of the Bill Hodges Trilogy

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. An easy, entertaining read. Many of the concepts such as core consciousness, mind control and hypnosis are complicated and accepted in the text without explanation. Other concepts such as mind invasion ( one mind physically taking over another) are fantasy, but interesting

What was one of the most memorable moments of End of Watch?

When Brady Hartsfield finds he has the power to jump into other peoples minds. When Bill Hodges finds he has terminal pancreatic cancer.

What about Will Patton’s performance did you like?

Great performance. Entertaining

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No. The concepts were too far out to evoke an emotion in me. Sad to see the series end , though.

Any additional comments?

At times Stephen King suffers from being a horror writer. He is writes well enough and his concepts are elegant enough that they could stand on their own without sensationalism. However, Can' t argue with success.

Terrific end to the trilogy

It's possible that Stephen King can do no wrong. I've never been disappointed in a single novel to date, and this trilogy i found to be one of his more satisfying works. It skirts on the edge of fantasy and I find interesting parallels to the unrelated although in a similar writing period to joyland. I actually listened to these in the wrong order, starting with finders keepers, as I didn't realise they were part of a set, Mr Mercedes next and finished with this. It didn't much matter its an extremely engaging series that will have more than enough to satisfy king and non king fans alike

Superb writing, wonderfully read

A brilliant end to the Hodges trilogy. Will Patton breathes extra life into King's typically well developed characters. As always King renders the paranormal not only conceivable but believable too. Gripping and moving story. It's a shame to leave these people and I hope there may be a Holly spin off story.

End of watch was enjoyable but not quite as good as the first but on par with the second the subject was a little more like King of old....
