About this listen

Cousin to Elizabeth I - and possibly Henry VIII's illegitimate granddaughter - Lettice Knollys had a life of dizzying highs and pitiful lows.

Entangled in a love triangle with Robert Dudley and Elizabeth I, banished from court, plagued by scandals, embroiled in treason, Lettice would lose a husband and son to the executioner's ax. In the first ever biography of this remarkable woman, Nicola Tallis takes us through her dramatic life and the grand sweep of the Tudor Age and the events that define it.

Who would have thought that there was more to say about the Elizabethan era! But in her biography of Lettice Knollys, Nichola Tallis has a lot more to say. By writing the life of a lesser-known woman who was, at different times, in and out of Elizabeth’s favour, we have a new perspective on the court and courtiers. It is a setting of splendour, luxury and eye-watering expenditure as well as intrigue and the sycophancy that flourishes under monarchy. But the focus is always on Lettice, her triumphs and many tragedies. While Elizabeth’s jealousy and punishment of any in her circle who married is well-documented, Lettice is a sad example of the extent of the Queen’s bitterness and meanness. Charlotte Stevens is an excellent narrator. This is a book I shall certainly be listening to again.
