Great Read

Ms. Cunningham Captures the Elven History of the Realms like no other. An excellent look at the moon blades and the conflict between the elven subraces. Danilo Thann is one of the best and well developed heroes of the Realms literature.

Her first book and it shows

I remember reading this when I was 12 or so and thought it was decent. Reading it again now years later I see a lot of things I don’t like. The audio portion is good. That is all fine.

But there just is not enough back story given to the main character. She isn’t a Mary Sue imo but more time should of have been taken to develop her. Because I could see some making the argument she is a Mary Sue.

It is hard to love this book mostly because the main character is supposed to be a great fighter But then acts like a teenager or preteen. Which is it is she an amazing fighter, or an immature half breed? cunning assassin, a well traveled adventurer who tracks her prey with efficiency... or a misguided and often times glass half empty unable to read between the lines young adult.

Sorry for being harsh I know this is Elaine first novel and even she has gone on record saying she made mistakes here and there. I just wish they had been corrected before the final product made it to shelves.

I want to like Arilyn a lot and even made D&D adventures with characters themed after her when I was a teenager but I cannot ignore the inconsistencies in her character flaws that i personally see. Now I wish I had spent more time as a Danilo fan. He should of turned into the main character imo.

Nope...

Couldn't get into this one. Didn't care about the characters or what was happening. I quit after 4 hours. Narration was ok.

Classic Forgotten Realms. Good start to the series

A Forgotten Realms fan will like this book. I especially like Danilo Than. Arylin(sp?) and Danilo have that spark that is often missing when 2 characters are brought together. Overall I think this is a great start to the series.

Great story

It's wonderful to relive these books after decades of absence. I read all of these books and many others while I was in high school and this brings back fantastic memories.

My first...

Would you consider the audio edition of Elfshadow to be better than the print version?

No... I actually preferred the print, but listening was an added benefit. I don't know, maybe it's the D&D adventure side of me.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Dan[ilo], for sure!

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Sumner's performance was all right - definitely not in my top 10 narrators, but I enjoyed him nonetheless.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Adventure... when and where you least expect it.

Any additional comments?

This was my first introduction to Elaine's writing. The story made me feel like I was watching a D&D session take place (or playing in one)! I enjoyed many aspects of the tale, especially Elaine's attention to Realmslore details, like Dale Reckoning, spell components, equipment and location names, and most of all the much shrouded history of the ancient elven kingdom of Evermeet. I've read a good deal of positive reviews about Evermeet (the book) and was told that this book (and the series which it's attached to) is an excellent entry point into it. I'm looking forward to completing the rest of the Songs and Swords series and finishing off with Evermeet when I get to it.

I gave the book four of five stars as there were certain points I felt that I was being dished out too much information rather than having to piece it together (particularly in the the last third of the book). As an author, I appreciate the intricacies of "showing" rather than "telling" and while Elaine seems to have this concept locked down in this book, a few instances put me back a little. Nothing distracting, mind you, just small things I pick up on

enjoyably simple.

The plot is predictable. The narration is silly at times. If you expect something light and good natured this is the right place.
