Hjalmar Söderberg (Estocolmo, 1869 - Copenhague, 1941). Narrador sueco, autor de novelas psicológicas en las que destaca la descripción del Estocolmo de finales del siglo xix, y que suelen tener como trasfondo pasiones que fueron motivo de escándalo entre los sectores puritanos. Su obra se caracteriza por el pesimismo, la fina ironía y la resignación. La imposibilidad del amor y «la incurable soledad del alma» son sus temas principales. Fue un polemista agudo y un fino observador. Su estilo, sencillo y preciso, está cuidadosamente trabajado; su tono firme y frío reflejó Estocolmo como una capital idílica y tranquila que se iba transformando en gran ciudad moderna.
