Auf Amrum wird ein herrenloses Segelschiff angetrieben. Von der Besatzung fehlt jede Spur. Dann jedoch ziehen Fischer die Leiche einer Frau aus der Nordsee: Paula Lemmer. Sie war am Vorabend in See gestochen. An ihrem Hinterkopf eine tiefe Wunde, die von einem Schlag stammen könnte. Ein Mord ist somit nicht ausgeschlossen. John Benthien übernimmt die Ermittlungen und entdeckt Parallelen zu einem ungelösten Fall einer 2005 ermordeten Frau. Damals suchte Benthien als junger Kommissaranwärter mit seinem Mentor Litmanen nach dem Täter. Litmanen verschwand im Zuge der Nachforschungen spurlos, sein Verbleib blieb ungeklärt. John fragt sich, ob er damals einen Fehler beging, der seinen Kollegen das Leben kostete.
