Publisher's Summary

Baking is an alchemical process for Corinna Chapman. At four am she starts work at Earthly Delights, her bakery in Calico Alley.

But one morning Corinna receives a threatening note saying "The wages of sin is death" and finds a syringe in her cat's paw. A blue-faced junkie has collapsed in the dark alley and a mysterious man with beautiful eyes appears with a plan for Corinna and her bread. Then it is Goths, dead drug addicts, witchcraft, a homeless boy, and a missing girl and it seems she will never get those muffins cooked in time.

With flair, chutzpah and a talent for kneading, Corinna Chapman will find out who exactly is threatening her life and bake some beautiful bread.

A fun easy read.

I am a big Kerry Greenwood fan and I love this series as Corinna is a strong, independent single woman. I always feel stronger after reading these books. I also really enjoy the variety of characters and the way that Kerry Greenwood discribes things, she paints such vivid pictures with her words that I feel like I can see, hear, smell and taste what is happening. Her willingness to explore the parts of a city that we like to ignore is to her credit. Mostly I enjoy the gentle story that unfolds in the book also I just want to find a bakery and eat bread after reading the book 🙂

4 stars for story, 2 for the reading

I loved the books when first released so thought I would revisit through audible.
Never did I think the Israeli god that is Daniel would …or could…be made to sound like a creepy bogan.
Shame, as usually I like the actress doing the reading.

Love your work Kerry

Kerry Greenwood delighted my imagination with the Ms Fisher series and she has done it again with outstanding characters, and her characteristic delightful indepth descriprions, coupled with a fabulous narration, it has created a winning combo.

Narration needs work

The narration felt very contrived and interfered with my capacity to enjoy the story. the narrator would often interrupt a sentence as if she thought it had ended, when it hadn't. So you get these vocal cadences that end when the sentence isn't finished. It really bothered me.

I'm also not all about the level of detail of cats. I'm not a cat person. The characters were interesting but the bad drag queen voices were disappointing.

Love and recommend this book

It had it all. Mystery, thrills, crime, sex, adventure, kink, humour and baking!
If you buy or borrow a hard copy of the actual book you also get recipes, but the convenience of an audio book does make up for their absence.
I enjoyed the reader as well, her deep rich tonnes lend themselves to a lot of the characters.
