تتناول الرواية قصة شجرة الدر كأول امرأة ملكة تتولي الحكم في تاريخ مصر الإسلامية، حيث قدرت لها الأقدار أن تتوج ملكة على مصر بعد مقتل الملك «طوران شاه» آخر سلاطين الدولة الأيوبية. وقد تزامن توليها للحكم مع أحداث تراجيدية شهدها الواقع السياسي الإسلامي علي المستوي الدولي في ذلك الوقت، حيث سقطت الخلافة العباسية باجتياح التتار لبغداد التي ظلت مركزا للخلافة طيلة خمسمائة عام، وانتقال مقر الخلافة إلي مصر. كما تزامنت فترة توليها الحكم مع مجئ ملك فرنسا لويس التاسع علي رأس الجيوش الصليبية للقضاء علي مصر بوصفها أقوي دولة إسلامية في ذلك الوقت. ورغم كل هذه التحديات التي فرضها الواقع الدولي استطاعت شجرة الدر أن تدير شئون البلاد بكفاءة واقتدار.
