About this listen

One mysterious mansion. Two rival journalists. Three weeks to uncover the story—and love—of a lifetime. Don’t miss this unforgettable romantic comedy performed by Phillipa Soo and John Cho!

Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn’t mind being called “Lady Death”. It suits the ice queen persona she’s cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn’t hesitate to run the obituary…only to discover that Dot is very much alive.

Nadine’s screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy—she’s been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal. Intrigued, Wes goes to the source to learn more—only to discover Nadine had the exact same idea…and the infuriating woman isn’t willing to respect dibs. Typical.

At first, Dot refuses to speak to either of the squabbling pair, but then they receive an unusual request—work together, and Dot will share everything. The offer seems too good to be true…and of course, it is: in a bitter twist of irony, Dot dies for real before she can finish recounting her story. Not all is lost, however. The estate’s executor allows Wes and Nadine access to Dot’s sprawling wonderland of a mansion for three weeks to find their answer. That’s three weeks of working together…three weeks of endless sweltering in tight spaces…three weeks of learning there could be something more between them than a desire to win at any cost.

And maybe, just maybe, under the rubble of all those could-have-beens they’ll uncover more than the secret of Dot Voline’s long-ago scandal—and Lady Death will finally embrace what she’s wanted from life all along.

The perfect balance of bitter and sweet
You know the story: Boy meets girl. Boy and girl hate each other. Then something wonderful happens: Boy and girl start to see the true nature of the other and fall deeply in love. But Drop Dead isn’t your average enemies-to-lovers story. In her latest rom-com, Lily Chu blends the sharp edges of rivalry with the soft sweetness of romance for a uniquely entertaining romp that you won’t want to hit pause on. Sparked by a prematurely published obituary for a not-dead-yet local author, rival Toronto journalists reluctantly team up to uncover a long-buried, high-stakes scandal that challenges both their personal and professional ambitions. Chu’s longtime narrator Phillipa Soo is joined by actor John Cho, making Drop Dead Chu’s first dual-narrated novel, but hopefully not her last. In an interview with Audible Editor Patty K Rivera, Chu shares how her love of obituaries, mysteries, and cats inspired her to take listeners on this rollercoaster ride full of intrigue, humor, and unexpected romance. — Margaret H., Audible Editor

Another great listen from Lily Chu. I’m not a big romance fan, but I really enjoy Chu’s books, because the characters don’t usually make silly decisions, the characters are fun and try to understand each other, and I like the workplace drama. Highly recommend!!

I loved that this was set in Canada! The story was quirky but well written with some great twists.

I was constantly looking forward to listening to it when I had available time.

The voice actors were great- I always enjoy an actual female/male cast!

Great story, though started a bit slowly. could have gone into more depth on daily lives, even the more intimate parts were very G rated

Starts out really interesting and then gets incredibly predictable and boring. Wanted to love it as I love her other books.

I’ve enjoyed Lily Chu’s other stories and this was equally as engaging. I think I finished it in a couple of days. Thank you Lily Chu, P Soo and J Cho 💕

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. The narrators were excellent, both very pleasing to listen to. The story is well written, and I just couldn't stop until I knew how it would be solved! I recommend this to anyone looking for a sweet love story mixed with an intriguing mystery.

This was such an enjoyable tale that had me amused and intrigued. The male voice was a little stilted but became a part of the character. I binged listening as it was so much fun.

Absolutely wonderful.

I’m recovering from years of psychological abuse, so I had to stop listening a few times when triggered. But, after finally getting through the entire audiobook, I really enjoyed the real-ness of it. I would not have been triggered if the characters and their relationships weren’t so well written & represented. I also love how certain work place practices that are very real, yet still questionable in their ethical nature were addressed. And I’ve always been a sucker for these kinds of endings, left vague with the intent of remaining spoiler-free.

Super frustrating, but great story!
