About this listen

Born with a secret power he must hide....

Telryn "Trip" Yert has always been a little odd, with hunches that are too accurate to explain. Magic is feared and forbidden in Iskandia, so he's struggled his whole life to hide his eccentricities. As a boy, he was forced to watch his mother's execution. Her crime? Witchcraft.

Understandably, Trip wants nothing to do with the power that lurks within him, always threatening to reveal itself. Instead, he dedicates himself to serving as an officer in the king's army, to battling pirates and imperial conquerors. He longs to become a soldier as respected and renowned as the legendary General Zirkander.

But his country is in need of more than a soldier.

After disappearing for over 1,000 years, dragons have returned to the world. A few of them are willing to be allies to mankind, as they were millennia before, but far more want to destroy or enslave humans and claim the world for themselves.

There are few people left with the power to fight dragons. For reasons he doesn't understand, Trip may be one of those people. But if he chooses to learn more about his heritage and the power he can wield, he risks losing everyone he loves and everything he longs to be.

I have enjoyed all of Lindsay's fantasy series collections and this one is good but didn’t hit quite as strongly as the others. Have listened to the whole series though and did enjoy it. The story is interesting and action packed as a lot of her work is.

Good fantasy story

I love the mix of adventure and humour in both this series and the earlier one with Ridge and Sardelle. The narrator does a great job pitching her voice differently for different characters and how she reads the story helps me to feel like I’m there alongside the characters.

Love the story and the narration

This is the second saga of Lindsay Buroker’s I’m listening to and I can’t get enough. I’ve even bought the dragon blood series and this series of books for my mum. The characters have individual and well fleshed out personalities, and these books are FUN compared to so many fantasy novels. These are also the first non-research books I’ve listened to in audio format and I was sceptical because I’m strangely sensitive to sounds, but I give the narrator huge props!! She varies the voices, infusing them with a level of nuance and fun that matches the way the book is written. I’ve been pleasantly surprised and really impressed…only problem is that I want to listen more than I can and have to drag myself back to the real world :)

Lovin Lindsay Buroker’s work!!

A great book, ruined by the narrator. I tried to force myself to listen, however I just can't.

Narration is terrible
