Publisher's Summary

Everyone was dead. Indian raiders massacred the entire wagon train. Only seven-year-old Hardy Collins and three-year-old Betty Sue Powell, managed to survive. With a knife, a faithful stallion, and the survival lessons his father taught him, Hardy must face the challenges of the open prairie as they head west in search of help. Using ingenuity and common sense, Hardy builds shelters, forages for food, and learns to care for Betty Sue. But their journey through this hostile wilderness is being tracked by even more hostile men. And, as he struggles to keep them alive, Hardy realizes that their survival may depend on his ability to go far beyond what his father had been able to teach him.

One of my favorites

This is one of the very best western that Louis L'Amour ever penned. So nice to have a Audible version.

Simply marvellous

Simply marvellous tale.

I read this story when I was quite young and it appealed to me tremendously then, perhaps because of the two children involved. I was thrilled to see the audio version available and I lapped it up like a sumptuous desert. Perfect length, excellent sequence of action, simply wonderful narration that brought the characters to life in a fresh and unforgettable way. Wow wow wow.

For me the only thing I would have changed was to have Hardy pray to God in the midst of some of his greatest challenges. I believe it would have been most appropriate since the story indicates that his father had brought a bible with him and was in the habit of reading to him. Other than that, an outstanding read.

A Good Western Novel

This was one of those hard to stop listening to Audible books. An excellent story of the West. My only problem with this story was the ages of the two main characters. At the age of 7 and 3 they had more survival skills and knowledge than I believe children of that same time would of had. If Louis had made each of them a few years older, or at least Hardy, the story would be more believable.

DON'T START AT BEDTIME!

I started this thinking that I would go to sleep to it and just rewind it and listen to it another time another time. Well that didn't work, I could not stop listening. That little boy was Awful smart. Big red was awful smart too. I thought the grizzly was going Get Em but he didn't. I believe this is a story that That any age could listen to. I don't believe you will be disappointed even if you enjoy the story just HalfAs much as I did!

Compelling story. Cheering for the young protagonist and his friend. Action and honor two great ingredients generously served by this author.
