In Black Friend, she turns her incisive perspective on both herself and the culture at large. Throughout the book, Ziwe combines pop-culture commentary and personal stories that grapple with her own (mis)understanding of identity. From a hilarious case of mistaken identity via a jumbotron to a terrifying fight-or-flight encounter in the woods, Ziwe raises difficult questions for comedic relief.

Story
Andy's story wasn't meant to turn out this way. Living out of a suitcase in his best friends' spare room, waiting for his career as a stand-up comedian to finally take off, he struggles to process the life-ruining end of his relationship with the only woman he's ever truly loved. As he tries to solve the seemingly unsolvable mystery of his broken relationship, he contends with career catastrophe, social media paranoia, a rapidly dwindling friendship group and the growing suspicion that, at 35, he really should have figured this all out by now.

Emily Ratajkowski is an acclaimed model and actress, an engaged political progressive, a formidable entrepreneur, a global social media phenomenon and, now, a writer. Rocketing to world fame at age 21, Ratajkowski sparked both praise and furor with the provocative display of her body as an unapologetic statement of feminist empowerment. My Body is a profoundly personal exploration of feminism, sexuality and power, of men's treatment of women and women's rationalizations for accepting that treatment.

Story
I Don't presents an inarguable case against marriage for modern women. With the incisive attention to detail and razor sharp wit that has characterised her work, Ford examines a broad range of topics, including the patriarchal history of marriage; the insidious and centuries long marketing campaign pop culture has conducted in marriage's favour; the illusion of feminist 'choice' in regard to taking men's names; the physical and social cost that comes with motherhood; and what a different kind of world could look like for women who were allowed to truly be free.

The book as is she is more than meets the eye
- By Anonymous User on 21-11-2023
Publisher's Summary
The hotly anticipated book from ‘one of the all-time pop-culture greats’ (New York magazine) that chronicles her shocking life and unyielding determination to not only survive but achieve her dreams.
Julia Fox is famous for many things: her captivating acting, such as her breakout role in the film Uncut Gems; her trendsetting style, including bleached eyebrows, exaggerated eyeshadow and cutout dresses; her mastery of social media. But all these share the trait for which she is most famous: unabashedly and unapologetically being herself.
This commitment to authenticity has never been more on display than in Down the Drain. Fox recounts her turbulent path to cultural supremacy: her parents’ volatile relationship that divided her childhood between Italy and New York City and left her largely raising herself; a possessive and abusive drug-dealing boyfriend whose torment continued even from within Rikers Island; her own trips to jail as well as to a psychiatric hospital; her work as a dominatrix that led to a complicated entanglement with a sugar daddy; a heroin habit that led to New Orleans trap houses and that she would kick only after the fatal overdose of her best friend; her own near-lethal overdoses and the deaths of still more friends from drugs and suicide; an emotionally explosive, tabloid-dominating romance with a figure she dubs “The Artist”; a whirlwind, short-lived marriage and her trials as a single parent striving to support her young son.
Yet as extraordinary as her story is, its universality is what makes it so powerful. Fox doesn’t just capture her evolution from grade-school outcast to fashion-world icon, she captures her transition from girlhood to womanhood to motherhood. Family and friendship, sex and death, violence and love, money and power, innocence and experience—it’s all here, in raw, remarkable and riveting detail.
More than a year before the book's publication, Fox's description of it as "a masterpiece" in a red carpet interview went viral. As always, she was just being honest. Down the Drain is a true literary achievement, as one-of-a-kind as its author.
Critic Reviews
‘Most startling of memoirs. Within two chapters I, too, was hooked … Fans of Edie Sedgwick, Cookie Mueller and Courtney Love will die for Down The Drain … I think I just accidentally landed on my book of the year’ Paul Flyn, Evening Standard
‘A gripping and powerful coming-of-age story that exposes the terrible repercussions of childhood neglect, society’s routine exploitation of the female body and the hollowness of celebrity’ Telegraph
‘Intense and compelling’ Sunday Times

Don’t waste your time
I love Julia Fox and I was so excited for this but I struggled through to halfway then gave up and DNF’ed it. Too many characters popping in and out to keep track of, with hours and hours of content just about drugs and stealing. While no doubt Julia has had a wild and tough life, I expected more substance rather than a retelling of every drug den she visited.

The people’s princess
SWers across the globe love you, Julia. Although I love Julia regardless, I’ve always been nervous to dig into her SW past. I worried she would demonise, or glorify, her past (as many American SWers before have been forced to choose). Instead, Julia’s voice comes across as an honest expression of her real experience. She doesn’t pass judgement or put forth an ideology. She only speaks to her thoughts and feelings. Imo, this is the voice sex workers want and need - a pragmatic narrative on sex work so regular citizens can make up their own minds. I know the memoir wasn’t written for swers, but her story made me feel something special. This SWer says thank you for being so vulnerable. I had tears throughout this book. Your (Julia’s) vulnerability is so appreciated and I feel inspired by your talent and sparkle. Thank you Julia for being you ❤️
