Ludo Rinizzi arbeitet im Leichenschauhaus. Gerade hat der Hobbyschriftsteller seinen ersten Roman fertig gestellt. Auf Anraten seines Literatur besessenen Freundes Simon schickt er ihn an die Pariser Éditions K, und tatsächlich lädt Verleger Krusowicz ihn zum Gespräch ein. Doch der Verleger will nicht Ludos Roman, sondern nur seinen wohlklingenden Namen. Ludo soll ihn hergeben für den Stoff eines anderen und dem bereits druckfrischen Buch jetzt in den Medien zum Erfolg verhelfen. Im Gegenzug verspricht ihm Krusowicz eine stolze Summe.
Reichlich verdutzt unterschreibt der frisch gebackene Pseudo-Autor den Vertrag. Als Ludo wenig später zu seinem Auto zurückkommt, findet er auf dem Rücksitz die Leiche eines Clochards. Und der Tote trägt tatsächlich eine Kopie "seines" Buches in der Manteltasche. Die Polizei ist ratlos und die Ereignisse überschlagen sich.
