About this listen

About this Audible Original

Gritty and suspenseful, Dietrich is a hard-boiled whodunnit from Audie Award-winning and internationally best-selling author Don Winslow, performed by four-time Academy Award nominee Ed Harris.

It’s the summer of ’77 in New York City, and the only thing more unnerving than the scorching heatwave is the rampant murder, leaving washed-up homicide detective Richard Dietrich on edge.

When Dietrich investigates a brutal mob hit the brass doesn’t want him to solve, he goes from phoning it in to getting in over his head. Caught up in a mysterious second homicide with an even more perplexing perpetrator, Dietrich starts to second guess his instincts—and his memory—as he searches for answers at the bottom of a bottle.

The story is very short but is well done. I was not expecting the ending so that was a surprise. Ed Harris does a great job. I am a big fan of his acting and this was a good performance. This was a nice listen to break up the epic 25+ hour books I tend to listen to.

Quick listen and excellent performance.

Loved Ed Harris narration, the through-line plot without any ridiculous red herrings, and the ending. Even though the alley clue was an obvious pointer to the killer, it didn’t detract from the overall story, and the exposition of systemic injustice in US legal system.

Taut, crisp and linear.

Great short punchy story, would be interesting to have more Diedrich stories happening in an earlier time period.

Ed Harris is a fantastic reader.
