Die "Welle" gab es wirklich: Die vorliegende Geschichte basiert auf einem Vorfall an der High School von Palo Alto, 1969. Ron Jones, der "echte" Mr. Ross, sagt in einem Interview mit der Zeitschrift "Scholastic Voice" vom 18.09.1981: "Ich glaube, irgendjemand hätte, gleich als ich mit der Welle begann, aufstehen sollen und sagen: 'Mr. Jones, ich folge Ihnen nicht, ich sage Ihnen, das ist schlecht, was Sie machen.'
