Während Martin seinen Anteil versteckt hat, ist seinem Bruder Alois nichts davon geblieben. Verzweifelt versucht er, Martin zur Herausgabe seines Anteils zu bewegen. Als dieser sich weigert, kommt es zu einem tödlichen Streit. Alois glaubt sich bereits am Ziel seiner Wünsche, doch er hat nicht mit dem erbitterten Widerstand seiner Nichte Klara gerechnet.
Durch den Verlust des Vaters sieht Klara sich, ihre Mutter und ihre Geschwister in tiefste Armut stürzen. Um das zu verhindern, will sie nach Rudolstadt gehen, um Fürst Ludwig Friedrich um Hilfe anzuflehen. Sie muss dafür einen Weg wählen, auf dem bereits zwei junge Frauen spurlos verschwunden sind. Obwohl die Bewohner der Umgebung glauben, dass der Teufel seine Hand im Spiel hat, lässt Klara sich nicht beirren. Dies ist jedoch nur die erste von vielen Gefahren, denen sich die junge Frau stellen muss...
