Nach anfänglichen Erfolgen erlitt der Perserkönig Xerxes auf seinem Kriegszug gegen die Griechen in der Seeschlacht bei Salamis 480 v. Chr. eine so ungeheure Niederlage, dass seine Flotte fast völlig zerstört, sein Heer aufgerieben und zersprengt wurde, dass er selbst in irrer Flucht mit wenigen seiner Getreuen, einem Bettler gleich, Susa, die Hauptstadt des persischen Königreiches, erreichte. Das ist der geschichtliche Hintergrund des dramatischen Gedichtes von Aischylos "Die Perser".
Wie ergreift, wie erschüttert die Rosar mit der frei aus dem Gedächtnis gesprochenen Wiedergabe der "Perser"!Aber sie erschöpft sich nicht in Klage und Wehklage. Die Stimme der Rosar wächst schließlich unvergessbar ins Verklärende, ins Befreiende des Tragischen, denn nicht nur die tiefschwarze Nacht des menschlichen Leids eröffnet sich hier, sondern auch das ewige Licht des mitleidenden Erbarmens.
