Zunächst einmal nimmt Dr. Thorndyke die wahnwitzigen Berichte des jungen Mannes nicht ernst. Denn Fred Calverleys Nervenkostüm ist einigermaßen ramponiert. Nach harten Schicksalsschlägen und gefahrvollen Situationen leidet Calverley offensichtlich an einem absonderlichen Verfolgungswahn und fühlt sich plötzlich auch noch von obskuren "Heimsuchungen" geplagt...

Fred Calverley hingegen ist anderer Auffassung: Es liegt ein Fluch auf dem rätselhaften Amulett, das er sich in Marseille zulegte. Ein todbringender Fluch, der jeden Besitzer des Juwels früher oder später das Leben kostet.
