Der sich als Messias einen Namen machte, stammt in direkter Linie von Abraham ab, welcher über mehr als zehn Generationen hinweg für die Zeugung König Davids verantwortlich war. Daraufhin brauchte es noch mehr als doppelt so vieler Söhne, Enkel und Urenkel, um Joseph das Leben zu schenken, der mit Maria bald auf die Reise gehen sollte.
Die Bibel zählt derweil jeweils vierzehn Stationen auf: von Abraham zu David, von dort bis ins babylonische Gefängnis und weiter. Die letzte Schwangerschaft in dieser Reihe galt als vom heiligen Geist empfangen, was dem Joseph weniger behagte, er fügte sich jedoch darein, nachdem ein Engel ihn bestärkt hatte. Es entsprach der Prophezeiung, dass eine Jungfrau ein männliches Kind gebären solle, dessen Name bedeute, dass Gott mit uns sei. Die unbefleckte Empfängnis war in der Folgezeit teils heftig umstritten, der Knabe wurde als Jesus getauft.
