"Die Frau ohne Schatten" ist eine märchenhafte Erzählung mit einer Fülle zauberisch-traumhafter Bilder und einer komplexen Handlungsstruktur, die sich vielleicht nicht sofort beim ersten Hören vollständig erschließt. Der Inhalt der Erzählung ist im Wesentlichen deckungsgleich mit dem Libretto der gleichnamigen Oper von Richard Strauss, das vor (!) der Erzählung entstand. Eine Gleichsetzung von Opernhandlung und dem Inhalt der Erzählung greift allerdings zu kurz, da Hofmannsthal zahlreiche Leerstellen des Opernlibrettos weiter ausdeutet und dadurch weitere Handlungsstränge und -wendungen eröffnet.
