Sein Talent für den Kontrapunkt läßt die Diven glänzen - besonders beim gesanglichen Höhepunkt eines Stückes, der Fermate. Seine Enttäuschung ist groß, als er merkt, daß er von beiden nur ausgenutzt wird.
Hoffmanns heiter-beschwingtes Werk trägt Züge des Bildungsromans, an dessen Ende Theodor amüsiert auf seine Jugend zurückblicken kann.
