Der "Vogelsang" ist ein Vorort einer kleinen Residenzstadt. Mit dem Titel dieser Erzählung (der vorletzten vollendeten des Schriftstellers) nimmt Wilhelm Raabe Bezug auf sein Erstlingswerk, die "Chronik der Sperlingsgasse". In dem vorliegenden Meisterwerk der Erzählkunst geht es um eine Freundschaft, von der es etwa in der Mitte des Buches heißt:
"Er ist doch mein Freund gewesen, und ich bin der seinige. Ich habe sein Leben miterlebt, und doch, grade hier, vor diesen Blättern, überkommt es mich von Seite zu Seite mehr, wie ich der Aufgabe, davon zu reden, so wenig gewachsen bin. Ich habe alles erreicht, was ich erreichen konnte; er nichts - wie die Welt sagt - und - wie ich mich zusammennehmen muss, um den Neid gegen ihn nicht in mir aufkommen zu lassen!"
