Publisher's Summary

“Hell is empty and all the devils are here.” (William Shakespeare)

Violet Parker knows better than to play with devils. They always cheat, especially when lives are at stake. Deadwood’s charming, troublemaking, and soul-sucking devils are no different, and they’re biting at her heels.

But the clock is ticking and Violet has no choice - she must risk her life to save her treasured Aunt Zoe. With any luck, she might be able to trick the devils and beat the old terrors at their own game. If not, Deadwood could end up short one Executioner.

“Executioners don’t duck, they swing.” (Violet Parker)

Loved Devil Days in Deadwood

I love all of Ann Charles’ books. This was no exception. It has paranormal, monsters, good guys, bad guys, romance, hilarious moments mixed with nail biting moments and quirky characters that have become family. It’s been days and still every time I think of Cornelius and the scarecrow I laugh out loud.

Caroline Shaffer does a great job narrating as always!

More than credit worthy. It’s a don’t miss.

Fabulous spooky world

Charles has imagined an unusual, detailed world of spooky monsters and crazy humans in Deadwood. The connecting story plots make me want a notebook, but the audio version keeps me on track Shaffer does an AMAZING jobs with the multiple characters such that I can identify them from her voice alone. I love all the mysteries and family history and the family that has supper each night at Zoe’s.

The only thing I don’t like is Violet. Seriously, she should be hitting the gym with the kids and Doc, being armed to the teeth every where she goes and have her hunting gear in a pack by her side after all the attempts on her life! I understand her fear but really, she has a big group of family and friends to protect, yet time and again she has to find a weapon to defend herself because she isn’t prepared. Her whining has diminished somewhat in this book, but the standing around and questioning to deflect while monsters come to destroy her and her friends is getting really old. Act your age and parental responsibilities, Violet!

overall I liked this series

I enjoyed this series. the story was good I liked the characters. The female lead got annoying at times. Her insecurity and mistrusting attitude, and her refusal to accept what she was got very aggravating. Up until about book 6 I wanted to reach threw the pages and slap her.

Entertaining paranormal series...

I really enjoy this series and how it has grown more and more paranormal as it has gone on. The first book I didn’t think the paranormal tag really fit until the end since it was more about a newbie realtor trying to sell houses but at this point in the series at is all paranormal all the time. The performance by the narrator is fantastic as well as the audio quality which is hard to find in audiobooks sometimes. I hate a monotone narrator but happily this narrator has lots of character and emotions behind her performance.
For my issues... the amount of time the books cover at this point has only been months. I hate when a series gets too caught up in following every single detail of a character’s life, that has been crammed full of drama, and never giving the characters a break. Have some progression of time between books, jump forward a year, add some mystery to what happened in that time frame. Makes a book and the characters more interesting.
My biggest issue is with the main character constantly calling her a**hole ex and biological father of her children a “sperm donor”. It is used in a derogatory way and implies he and all sperm donors are trash, horrible, people. As someone with fertility issues who used a real sperm donor I find this offensive to myself, my sperm donor, and my child. I strive to make my child comfortable and happy about where he came from and when people in fiction and in real life call their deadbeat exes “sperm donors” so as to emotionally distances themselves, it puts negative connotations on actual donors and donor conceived children that can cause lasting problems. Most sperm, egg, and embryo donors are amazing people who are offering hope and a chance at parenthood for those who otherwise would be unable. I am amazingly thankful to my sperm donor and I want my son to be too. So I do not enjoy when people (like in these books) use the term for an a**hole who abandoned their child/ren. The author could use so many other insults and expletives for the character who is an abusive, manipulative, predator, but she just keeps using this one.

Intriguing

Although this was an extremely long series, I found it interesting. Old man Harvey's parts were the best!

It just keeps getting better and better.

Shaffer just keeps getting better at reading Deadwood. The stories are never boring. I love the humor . The characters are ones, well at least most of them are funny or at least loyal. Just a great story and group of people. Thanks Ann for keeping me company at night.
