Die Hauptfigur des Werkes ist Teta Linek, eine alte Magd. Ihr Leben lang hat sie mit unermüdlichem Fleiß und in steter Hingabe ihrer Herrschaft gedient. Der einzige Mensch mit dem sich die einsame Frau verbunden fühlt, ist ihr Neffe Mojmir. Jahrzehntelang schickt ihm Teta einen großen Teil ihres mühsam verdienten Lohns, damit der Frühwaise die Schule besuchen, Theologie studieren und Pfarrer werden kann.
Diese Handlungsweise, nach außen hin ein Zeugnis uneigennütziger Liebe, ist in Wirklichkeit nicht frei von Berechnung. Tata möchte nach ihrem Tod, vor dem sie trotz echter Frömmigkeit große Furcht empfindet, einen verlässlichen Fürsprecher auf Erden zurücklassen. Als Geistlicher wird Mojmir, so glaubt sie, ihr einmal den Weg zur ewigen Seeligkeit leichter machen können.
