Vietnam, 1952: Der Reporter Thomas Fowler berichtet für die Londoner "Times" aus Saigon. Fowler führt Pyle in die Gesellschaft Saigons ein und bald werden die ungleichen Männer Freunde. Doch dann verliebt sich Pyle in Fowlers vietnamesische Geliebte Phuong. Und nicht nur auf privater Ebene tut sich plötzlich ein Graben zwischen Fowler und Pyle auf: Bei seinen Recherchen zu einer Serie blutiger Terroranschläge findet Fowler heraus, dass Pyle nicht der naive Mediziner ist, der er zu sein vorgibt.
