Einer rätselhaften Legende zufolge zog vor 1000 Jahren irgendein Mönch, ganz in schwarz gekleidet, durch die Wüste irgendwo in Syrien oder Arabien... Und mehrere Meilen entfernt von der Stelle, die er durchwanderte, erblickten Fischer einen anderen schwarzen Mönch, der langsam über die Oberfläche eines Sees dahinglitt. Dieser zweite Mönch war eine Luftspiegelung. Aus dieser Luftspiegelung entstand eine zweite, aus der zweiten eine dritte, sodass sich das Bild des schwarzen Mönchs ohne Unterbrechung aus einer Schicht der Atmosphäre in eine andere fortsetzte. Man erblickte ihn in Afrika, in Spanien, in Indien, im hohen Norden... Endlich überschritt er die Grenzen der irdischen Atmosphäre und nunmehr irrt er durch den Weltraum, ohne je die Bedingungen zu finden, unter denen er verlöschen könnte... Der Magister Kowrin, der diese Legende selbst erzählt, leidet unter seinen Nerven...
