Nachts sollten alle Kinder schlafen. Aber manche sind einfach nicht müde. Auch der kleine Häwelmann kann nicht einschlafen. Er liegt in seinem Rollbettchen und ist wach. Seine Mutter schläft neben ihm in einem großen Himmelbett und hört ihn nicht, als er sie ruft. Aber der kleine Häwelmann weiß sich zu helfen: Er macht einfach aus seinem Hemd ein Segel und lässt sein Bettchen wie ein Boot fahren. Erst im Zimmer über Decke und Wände und schließlich zum Fenster hinaus. Der große runde Mond ist sein Begleiter und leuchtet ihm auf der Fahrt durch die Nacht. Die geht erst durch die Stadt, dann in den Wald, wo auch die Tiere schon schlafen, und zuletzt in den schwarzen Himmel hinauf bis zu den Sternen. Eine aufregende Nachtreise macht der kleine Häwelmann. Doch irgendwann ist sie zu Ende, weil auch der Mond schlafen geht und nicht mehr leuchten kann. Plötzlich wird es ganz dunkel am Himmel.
