Mitten in der Aufbruchsstimmung der Frauenbewegung stellte Esther Vilar 1971 in ihrer Streitschrift Der dressierte Mann die These auf, dass mitnichten die Frau durch den Mann unterdrückt werde, sondern dass es viel eher der umgekehrte Fall sei. Mit dieser Provokation löste sie einen Skandal aus. Doch nur auf den ersten Blick scheint sie einseitig Partei für den Mann zu ergreifen. Vielmehr geht es ihr generell um die Unfreiheit im Umgang der Geschlechter miteinander. Wogegen sie kämpfte, waren Rollenmodelle und Klischees, die auch heute nicht überwunden sind. Leslie Malton setzt diese bissige Polemik einzigartig um.
