Auch seine Kriminalnovelle Der Zweikampf wird von diesem Motiv bestimmt: Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts wird ein Herzog hinterrücks ermordet. Indizien und Gegenindizien werden gesammelt - und plötzlich gerät eine bisher unbescholtene Frau in Verdacht. Ein Duell soll schließlich über Schuld und Unschuld entscheiden.
