Christian Wolf möchte seine Geliebte Johanne beeindrucken. Hierfür benötigt er Geld. Dieses beschafft er sich durch Wilddiebstahl. Sein Nebenbuhler Robert sieht ihn hierbei und zeigt ihn an. Nach einem Jahr im Zuchthaus findet er keine Arbeit und wird aus der Not heraus wieder Wilddieb. Hierbei wird er wieder geschnappt und zur Strafarbeit auf eine Festung gebracht. Anschließend möchte er in die Gesellschaft zurückkehren und durch ehrliche Arbeit Geld verdienen. Dies gelingt ihm aber nicht, denn niemand möchte einen Kriminellen bei sich arbeiten lassen. So gelangt er schließlich zu einer Räuberbande und muss mehrmals sein Leben aufs Spiel setzen, um an Essen zu gelangen. Schließlich wird ihm das Räuberleben zu viel und er beschließt, Soldat zu werden...
