Der Sergeant Grischa, der unscheinbare, gutmütige Russe mit der leidenschaftlichen Seele wird zum Anlass dafür, dass Disziplin und Menschlichkeit kollidieren. Im März 1917 war er aus einem Kriegsgefangenenlager in Litauen geflohen. Er wollte nach Hause, ostwärts, zu seinem Kind, das er noch nicht kennt. Als eine Streife ihn gefangen nimmt, folgt er dem Rat der Partisanin Babka. Ahnungslos gibt er sich als der verstorbene Überläufer Bjuschew aus. Er wird der Spionage verdächtigt und zum Tode verurteilt. Von nun an wird sein Schicksal zu einem juristischen Fall, zu einer Frage der Kompetenzen.
