In einem Oktober jagt der Deichgraf auf seinem Schimmel zum Deich hinaus, der von einem schweren Unwetter bedroht wird. Um den alten Damm zu retten, müsste er den neuen einreißen, was er aber verweigert. Da bricht der alte Damm, und Hauke muss zusehen, wie seine Frau und sein Töchterchen in den Fluten umkommen.
Daraufhin stürzt er sich mit seinem Schimmel selbst in die Fluten. Im Aberglauben der Deichbewohner lebt er aber weiter als "Schimmelreiter", der bei drohendem Unheil auf dem Deich zu sehen ist.
