 Hofrat Arbogast erzählt in einer Tafelrunde über sein Leben. Am Tage seiner Konfirmation erhält er ein kleines Päckchen. Das anonym bei seiner Mutter abgegeben wurde. Wie sich an der Schrift erkennen lässt, stammt es von einer Adligen. Das Päckchen enthält ein kleines Büchlein mit Gedichten und Versen. Arbogast wird aufgefordert sich an diesem Büchlein zu orientieren, was er auch macht. Nach dem Tod seines Vaters macht er eine Lehre bei einem befreundeten Goldschmied in der Stadt. Er wird Geselle und zieht durch die Lande. Nach mehreren Abenteuer begegnet er seiner großen Liebe.
